Genesis Invitational Core Plays: PGA DFS Picks

After getting all four golfers through the cut in last week’s core plays article, we’re back again this week for the year’s second elevated event. It’s why we are here to continue our PGA DFS picks series with our Genesis Invitational Core Plays.

Tiger Woods plays host to the Genesis invitational that will take place at historic Riviera Country Club. The 7,300 yard par 71 course offers a unique blend of holes that require excellence throughout the bag. Long par 3’s, drivable par 4’s, doglegs in both directions, it’s a fantastic layout that is sure to provide some theater for the best in the world to showcase their skills. I’ll be looking for elite ball strikers this week who have added length off the tee to combat the long and challenging layout

These Genesis Invitational core plays will get you started on building a great PGA DFS picks lineup. Genesis Invitational Core Plays

Scottie Scheffler – $11,500

He’s the best player in the world and is playing golf at a level that not many are capable of matching. He’s finished inside the top 5 in 10 of his last 15 starts. Over the last 24 rounds he ranks 4th in strokes gained off the tee and 2nd in strokes gained on approach. At a course like Riviera that heavily favors elite ball striking, playing the best ball striker on tour is something you’re unlikely to regret.

Ludvig Aberg – $9,200

I firmly believe Aberg is a rising superstar on the PGA tour. We’ll be looking back in a few months from now wondering how we were able to roster him without going above $10k salary threshold. He’s already one of the best drivers on TOUR, averaging over 314 yards and hitting nearly 65% of his fairways. That combination of length and accuracy is extremely rare, and will suit this course perfectly. Coming off two consecutive top 10 finishes, I believe this may be one of the last events this season we see him priced this cheap. Take the value with this budding star.

Justin Thomas – $9,100

Justin Thomas is simply priced too low for his expected range of outcomes this week, so he provides tremendous value in the low $9,000 price range. Coming off 5 straight top 12 finishes, it’s clear J.T. is feeling confident in his game again after a disappointing 2023 season. He’s one of only three players in this field to rank inside the top 20 in strokes gained off the tee, on approach, and around the green over the last 24 rounds. He’s finished inside the top 10 in this event 3 out of his 7 total starts. He’ll be a popular selection this week, but I would classify him as good chalk.

GPP Flier – Tom Kim – $8,100

Since bursting onto the scene in 2022 with two wins in his rookie season, Kim has slowly fallen out of the limelight a bit. Inconsistencies in various parts of his game over the last year have held him back from being one of the elite players on TOUR, but he still possesses the game to compete at Riviera. With four top 10 finishes in his last 10 starts, along a 17th place finish last week in Scottsdale where he gained 5 strokes on approach over the field, there’s certainly upside to be had at his low $8,000 price range. With an ownership projection in the single digits, he’s worth taking a shot on this week as a differentiator.
