NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Alperen Sengun: Suns at Warriors

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 47.13 | FanDuel: 47.73
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 23.4% | FanDuel: 29.2%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $9,900 | FanDuel: $9,700

Giannis Antetokounmpo (adductor) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (illness) are both questionable, and their statuses will dramatically shape the slate. Oklahoma City lost only one game thus far, and the team faces Phoenix on Friday then heads to Portland on Monday.

The Thunder are favored by 8.5 points against a Timberwolves (10-7) squad at full health without a lot on the line. It is unlikely that SGA will play unless he is feeling up to it. Antetokounmpo missed three games, and considering that Miami is an 8.5-point home favorite, he could be closer to doubtful. The Heat are playing at the fastest pace in the league, eschewing both screens and pick-and-roll sets at an all-time low rate. The team does have a 110.6 defensive efficiency rating, which is the fourth best in the league, though being at an extreme pace means more possessions for the opposition, which is how Miami is allowing the eighth-most points in the league at 117.9 points per game.

If either star plays, they should be considered close to seeing their typical minutes. If either is out, then their remaining teammates would all get a boost with more fantasy options becoming available.

Be sure to tune in to the Stokastic NBA Live Before Lock Show at 5:00 p.m. ET on YouTube for all of the up to the minute injury reports and DFS analysis.

Alperen Sengun is going to take on more of a scoring and rebounding role as Kevin Durant (personal), Steven Adams (ankle), Tari Eason (oblique), and Dorian Finney-Smith (ankle) all deal with various injuries. Last year, the 23-year-old made his first All-Star Game, and this year he is averaging a career-high 22.4 points and 7.1 assists with a solid 9.7 rebounds and 2.0 stocks (combined steals and blocks). He is also power forward eligible on both of the main DFS sites, which is glorious!

Al Horford (hamstring) and Jonathan Kuminga (knee) are both out, and that leaves the cupboard bare at the pivot position, meaning Draymond Green is going to have his work cut out for him tonight and Sengun should be able to feast at any time the defensive maven is on the bench. Gary Payton II is a fine discount dandy on DraftKings ($3,400, 29.7%), though not as much on FanDuel ($4,000, 7.1%).

Amen Thompson is only available at point guard on DraftKings ($8,200, 19.2%), but he is eligible for both guard positions on FanDuel ($8,200, 35.7%), which is leading to vastly different levels of rostership, despite having the identical salaries. Clint Capela is interesting on the three-game late slate, though he would be in play as a differentiation play on the featured slate if he were to draw a start. This is a 10:00 p.m. ET game, so it is unlikely that news is available when the first five games lock.

Reed Sheppard and Josh Okogie are fine to sprinkle across lineups based on salary and position needs or personal preference. No Warriors, aside from Payton, are projecting for double-digit popularity.

Jordan Goodwin: Suns at Kings

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 26.72 | FanDuel: 26.81
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 23.1% | FanDuel: 50.7%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $5,400 | FanDuel: $4,700

Jordan Goodwin bounced around the league, playing for four franchises, with this being his second stint for the Phoenix Suns. Grayson Allen (quad) will be out for a sixth straight game, and Jalen Green (hamstring) could miss another month or more.

Goodwin started the last two games, and in his three most recent outings, he averaged 29.7 minutes, 11.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals. That may not seem like a lot, but he has 30-fantasy point upside against a Sacramento defense that is pedestrian on the best days.

Collin Gillespie is a late-bloomer, though he always flashed promise, even when he worked his way into the starting lineup for the 2017-18 Villanova Wildcats, who won the NCAA Championship with Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Donte DiVincenzo, Eric Paschall and Omari Spellman. Working off the bench, Gillespie averaged 30.6 minutes over the last five games, with 17.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.8 steals.

The Suns won 10 of their last 13 games as Devin Booker and Mark Williams helped propel the revamped roster. Dillon Brooks and Royce O’Neale are fine roster fillers, though they have more appeal on the late slate.

The Kings are an absolute disaster, and it appears there is no plan. Somehow the franchise that at one point boasted both De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton is relying on Russell Westbrook, who was signed after the season started, and Dennis Schroeder as the point guards. It doesn’t help that Domantas Sabonis is out, yet that has not really translated to additional fantasy production for Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan in the same way it did with the Rebound King missed time last year.

Keegan Murray is healthy, which actually crowds things a little, as the team added Precious Achiuwa off the scrapheap when Murray was out. The cherry on top is Malik Monk is somehow persona non grata, barely playing more than 24 to 25 minutes and having three games of less than 20 in his last eight appearances. Achiuwa has positive leverage on both DraftKings and FanDuel, where his projected popularity is actually less than his expected probability of landing in the optimal lineup. That will likely subside in later updates, though it is at least worth calling out.

NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Immanuel Quickley: Raptors vs. Pacers

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 34.54 | FanDuel: 32.84
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 22.8% | FanDuel: 16.4%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $6,800 | FanDuel: $6,900

RJ Barrett is out for at least 10 days with a sprained knee, which makes the other Toronto starters appealing, and Immanuel Quickley has the best fantasy point-per-dollar ratio among the first five.

Barrett (19.4 points), Brandon Ingram (21.6) and Scottie Barnes (19.2) have a real chance to each average over 20 points per game, especially if there are periods like now where one of the three is out. Each contributes across the various statistical categories, and when everything breaks their way, the extra opportunities that are available with Barrett sidelined make this duo solid tournament targets.

Quickley has a nice floor, buoyed by a career-high 46.1% success frate from the field, with a 56.2% eFG also serving as a highwater mark. His increased steal rate while also having capable teammates at the other positions should allow him to continue to operate efficiently. The frontcourt is manned by Jakob Poeltl, the ever-steady Sandro Mamukelashvili and rookie Collin Murray-Boyles. They may absorb a couple of the offensive opportunities vacated by Quickley, though it is likely to be Jamal Shead, Gradey Dick and Ja’Kobe Walter who fill in the minutes.

Pascal Siakam, Bennedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard are tertiary targets, with veteran guard T.J. McConnell an early placeholder value. Do not be fooled by McConnell; he is unlikely to play more than 18 to 20 minutes, and there will be far better punts by the time all injury reports are released.
