NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Jalen Johnson: Hawks at Wizards

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 56.28 | FanDuel: 53.99
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 46.3% | FanDuel: 49.6%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $10,000 | FanDuel: $10,200

The Hawks had a 73-54 lead heading into halftime, as the Denver Nuggets looked like they may have been enjoying Atlanta. Jalen Johnson posted a triple-double in the first half, in just 16:44 which is good for second place on the all-time list. First place, well that record is held by Nikola Jokic who did it in 14:33, seven years ago.

Jokic is averaging a triple-double this season, leading the league with 12.4 rebounds and 11.0 assists, with his 29.2 points per game ranking sixth and well behind the 35.3 of Luka Doncic, so the unheard of statistical NBA Triple Crown is not really in play. While Jokic just missed out on his own triple-double, he did have 30 points in the second half as the Nuggets won both quarters 40-30, erasing the deficit and winning the game 134-133.

Johnson did play 37.6 minutes last night and he missed Wednesday’s game with calf tightness. Atlanta has not yet released their first injury report, though considering that the Hawks are nearly double-digit road favorites, the oddsmakers believe the budding superstar will play. If he does, the soon-to-be 24-year-old is a priority play, currently holding the highest median fantasy point projection on the slate. It is expected that Kristaps Porzingis will be out, since he is again dealing with health issues that plagued him last year. He played 20.5 minutes off the bench last night, which was only the second time in his career that he appeared in a regular season game as a reserve.

Nickel Alexander Walker and Dyson Daniels have both elevated their games, helping cover for Trae Young. This has increased their salaries, so they are neutral plays tonight, even with the great matchup — though both will be priority clicks if Johnson is out. Vit Krejci is placeholder value on DraftKings ($4,000, 11.1%) and FanDuel ($3,900), with the unique positioning of seeing a trickle down effect if Johnson is out, or potentially being usurped by other pending news.

Mouhamed Gueye and Onyeka Okongwu would also get a boost if Johnson is out, otherwise neither is expected to be on more than 2% of lineups, across the main DFS sites.

Washington has several key players sidelined with injuries, including starters Alexandre Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly, rookie Tre Johnson and veteran wing Corey Kispert. This has resulted in rookie Will Riley playing 26-to-27 minutes off of the bench each of the last two games. He is one of the players who could become the punt du jour, depending on the status of Khris Middleton (knee soreness), Tristan Vukcevic (knee) and Cam Whitmore (illness). The fewer options that coach Brian Keefe has, the more likely he will turn to Riley. Keep in mind that Riley has been bouncing between the Wizards and their G-League team, so we need to confirm he is on the Washington roster tonight.

Kyshawn George, Marvin Bagley III and C.J. McCollum have seen their results fluctuate wildly, though each is in the mix tonight given the many missing teammates and the favorable matchup against Atlanta. Each projects to be on between 20%-to-30% of fantasy lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Ryan Rollins: Bucks at Pistons

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $7,900 | FanDuel: $7,700

AJ Green (shoulder) is doubtful and it will be interesting to see if Kevin Porter Jr. plays tonight, after logging 36.7 minutes against Philadelphia last night. This is the first time he has encountered a back-to-back, though with Giannis Antetokounmpo out, KPJ has moved into the starting lineup alongside Ryan Rollins, who did an exceptional job of winning the starting point guard role while Porter was out for 19 games.

If Porter is not in the starting lineup, but active, we should be very trepidatious of his actual playing time. Especially after the Oscar Tshiebwe debacle Thursday and then the Kelly Olynyk getting a scant 5:48 off the bench last night, with starter Bismack Biyombo getting a little over 10 minutes. Outside of announcing starters and which players are active, the NBA has turned into quite the guessing game and we still three weeks away from the “unofficial” start of the glorious Christmas Day games.

Porter is currently projected for 31.7 minutes, which may be a touch high on this back-to-back, since we have nothing else to look at this season — though it is reasonably attainable. If he gets the night off, then Cole Anthony would become a strong value.

Rollins is a nice tournament differentiator, who would get a bump if Porter is out. He has been outstanding this year, both as a scorer 17.8 points per game and a facilitator with 6.0 assists, while still playing solid defense. Even though this is a tough road matchup against the Pistons, the usage and minutes should be there for Rollins to have a path to mid-40s fantasy points and top end upside of a 50-burger.

Be sure to tune in to the Stokastic NBA Live Before Lock Show at 6:00 p.m. ET on YouTube for all of the up-to-the-minute injury reports and DFS analysis. Tournament strategies for both the DraftKings and FanDuel slates will be discussed.

Myles Turner is a mediocre option, since he only gets up to a tick over one fantasy point per minute without Antetokounmpo on the court, typically playing his standard minutes. Bobby Portis and Kyle Kuzma can be sprinkled across player portfolios for differentiation, though neither has a particularly enthralling “optimal” rating on the Stokastic Boom/Bust Tool.

Cade Cunningham has the the second-highest median fantasy projection tonight and he will become the belle of the ball if Johnson rests. Tobias Harris and Jalen Duren are the best Detroit options on DraftKings, with Duren standing alone on FanDuel.

NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Bam Adebayo: Heat vs. Kings

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 43.63 | FanDuel: 42.25
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 36.4% | FanDuel: 42.6%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $7,700 | FanDuel: $7,900

Bam Adebayo looks like a strong play across the main DFS sites, particularly since he has power forward eligibility on FanDuel. After one brief season of relevance, out of nowhere in 2022-23 when Sacramento finished third in the Western Conference with a 48-34 record, the team is already back to full on dysfunction.

De’Aaron Fox was dealt to San Antonio last year, Domantas Sabonis (knee) is out until January, Dennis Schroder is hurt and when he has been available, he has been a washed up third guard most of the time, which terrible since he was brought in to be the starting point guard … but wait … there’s more. Zach LaVine has failed to reach double-digit points in four of his last nine appearances and things were so bad in on Wednesday, the starters, aside from Keegan Murray were benched midway through the third quarter in a close game and aside from Russell Westbrook who played 3.5 minutes to begin the final frame, they were forced to watch the second-unit end up losing by 26 points in Houston.

This is not the kind of team that is ready to face the unique Miami offense tonight, even with Tyler Herro unlikely to play. The Heat are far from perfect, but coach Erik Spoelstra has led them to a 14-9 record, with a strong defense and with Herro playing in only five, while Norman Powell, Bam Adebayo and Nikola Jovic each missed five or more games due to various maladies.

Adebayo is a borderline 20/10 player night in and night out, with Powell providing solid offense as his late career breakout continues and Davion Mitchell has been a plesant surprise, with a career high 7.8 assists per game, with strong defense. Add in Kel’el Ware, Andrew Wiggins and Jaime Jaquez Jr. and that is the makings of a team that is likely to finish top-four in the Eastern Conference.

Adebayo, Powell and Jaquez are all north of 25% rostership on FanDuel and 30% on DraftKings, with Malik Monk being the Sacramento priority on DraftKings, with Westbrook earning that designation on the blue site.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Picks

If you’re serious about winning in NBA DFS, you know the edge comes from having the right tools. The same principle applies to sports betting, and that’s where Portfolio EV shines.

Take a bet like Myles Turner to have fewer than 12.5 points tonight. On the surface, it’s a simple play. But behind the scenes, it’s a +EV bet, meaning it’s mathematically profitable based on the best odds available. Portfolio EV finds these +EV bets and allows you to bet them at high volume with just a couple clicks, maximizing your bankroll’s long-term profitability.

Digging into the details on Portfolio EV, Turner is currently listed at Hard Rock at +100 for over under 12.5 points, with other books using that threshold in the -120 to -130 range, which is between a NEGATIVE 5.2% and 9.1% expected ROI. While the 3.3% expected ROI for this Hard Rock line is not exactly sexy, it is a steady return and this would also be fine as a same-game parlay leg to unlock the 30% boost today.

Let Portfolio EV do the heavy lifting, pitting the books against each other and finding the best values from a top-down betting approach.

Tonight Turner projects for 11.9 points and while he had 19 last night, he also was 8-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line. That was a massive outlier representing 18% of his total season attempts from the charity stripe and in his last 12 games, Turner had two or fewer attempts eight (75%) times. Six times in this stretch has he had 13 or more points and that is with Antetokounmpo missing five games and playing only three minutes in another.
