NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Derik Queen: Pelicans vs. Bulls

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 35.33 | FanDuel: 35.19
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 50.6% | FanDuel: 18.8%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $5,800 | FanDuel: $6,800

Derik Queen is on a nice heater across the last handful of games, which the FanDuel salary algorithm recognized, though DraftKings not as much. This is clearly delineated in the projected popularity for Queen in tonight’s large-field tournaments.

After missing eight games, Zion Williamson played 29.1 and 29.6 in his return, sitting out Saturday’s game, which was the second leg of a back-to-back. In the two games where Williamson and Queen started together, interim coach James Borrego staggered their minutes, giving each 10 to 14 without the other while having them start and finish games together. This is, of course, already anticipated in the projections.

In the last three games, Queen averaged 31.3 minutes and 16.3 field goal attempts with a strong 53.1% conversion rate and a 58.1 eFG%. This culminated in 23.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.7 stocks (combined blocks and steals). It appears that with Jordan Poole out, Williamson and Queen are able to help alleviate some of the facilitation responsibilities for rookie Jeremiah Fears and veteran backup Jose Alvarado.

Karlo Matkovic (calf) is going to be out for a week, and both Jordan Hawkins (personal) and Herbert Jones (back) are out for tonight. Chicago plays at the second-fastest pace in the league this season with 104.2 possessions per 48 minutes while allowing 116.6 points per 100 possessions. New Orleans is slightly above average in pace, though the Pelicans are dreadful on defense at a 119.9 defensive efficiency rating.

This game has a delightful 245.5-point total with ample DFS options at a variety of salaries and positions. The Bulls will be without Isaac Okoro, Zach Collins and Dalen Terry, while Kevin Huerter (illness), Nikola Vucevic (knee) and Patrick Williams (wrist) are questionable. Ayo Dosunmu will get a boost if Huerter misses a second consecutive game, with Matas Buzelis and Jalen Smith getting a bump if Vucevic and/or Williams are out. Josh Giddey is a strong option, and his lofty salary will look more affordable as more injury news is released throughout the day, creating more value options.

Wrapping up the matchup, Trey Murphy III is always a tournament flier, and rookie Micah Peavy is an unnecessary trap even if he draws another spot start. Finally, to be clear, Zion is a terrific play across the main DFS sites.

NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Jay Huff: Pacers vs. Pistons

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 22.26 | FanDuel: 23.26
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 31.7% | FanDuel: 8.1%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $3,900 | FanDuel: $3,900

Jay Huff is a basketball vagabond, going undrafted in 2021 after leaving the University of Virginia early. The Washington Wizards signed him for Summer League that season before cutting him in the fall, when the Los Angeles Lakers G-League team picked him up.

He bounced around the lower levels of the organization, getting into four games for the parent club before being waived and rejoining the Wizards and being named the G-League Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 4.0 blocks per game. Then it was two-way deals with Denver and Memphis prior to being traded to Indiana this summer.

It is worth bringing all of this up since it appears that Huff carved out a sizeable role off the bench, getting 27.2 and 26.0 minutes in the last two games. Isaiah Jackson started, though he played 16.3 and 17.9 minutes in these games, and of course, he is almost always in foul trouble shortly after tipoff. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl appears to be the odd man out for now, having lost the starting job and sliding from 20.3 minutes to 16.5 and then 12.3 in the last three games as a reserve. Clearly, this is an unsettled and muddled mess, but it does look like Huff has the upper hand for now, and he is intriguing due to his power forward/center eligibility with 39.8 and 20.8 DraftKings points in his last two outings. Since he is center only on FanDuel, he is not particularly appealing unless he were to be named the starter, and even then, the opportunity cost is high.

Jalen Duren has been outstanding this season, and it would not be a surprise to see him continue the trend of keeping Jackson in early foul trouble. Cade Cunningham is a tough click with his five-figure salary, though he is a tournament target due to his massive volume and inconsistent efficiency, giving him upside when his shot is falling.

NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

Reed Sheppard: Rockets at Suns

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 31.11 | FanDuel: 30.68
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: n/a | FanDuel: 40.2%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $5,100 | FanDuel: $5,300

DraftKings is excluding the last three games of the night from their featured slate, though this analysis is mostly portable to the late-slate contests. On FanDuel, Reed Sheppard is one of the most popular play today, having secure minutes with Kevin Durant and Jae’Sean Tate tending to personal matters, Dorian Finney-Smith out due to ankle soreness, and Tari Eason out until Christmas.

The second-year guard is inconsistent and actually disappointing as the team needed him to fill in for Fred VanVleet. The last seven games showed a promising trend, with Sheppard finding his shot at a 57.7% success rate from the field and a sterling 3.6 of 6.7 (53.2%) from beyond the arc. He is handing out 3.1 helpers, but it is the 2.5 stocks per game that are really helping his fantasy production.

Josh Okogie is a solid discount dandy at $3,900, though he is likely to lose main-slate appeal as more injury news is released. Alperen Sengun is one of many strong center options, and Amen Thompson is always viable in tournaments for his 50-plus fantasy point potential.

This is a back-to-back for Phoenix, so it is unlikely that Mark Williams will play, plus Ryan Dunn (thumb) missed yesterday and Grayson Allen missed four games with a quad injury. If Allen remains out, Collin Gillespie is in play for the featured tournaments, with Jordan Goodwin in the mix for the late-slate contests. Dillon Brooks should be motivated and chippy, while Devin Booker is a DFS stalwart as always.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Picks

If you’re serious about winning in NBA DFS, you know the edge comes from having the right tools. The same principle applies to sports betting, and that’s where Portfolio EV shines.

Take a bet like Dennis Schroder to have fewer than 12.5 points tonight. On the surface, it’s a simple play. But behind the scenes, it’s a +EV bet, meaning it’s mathematically profitable based on the best odds available. Portfolio EV finds these +EV bets and allows you to bet them at high volume with just a couple clicks, maximizing your bankroll’s long-term profitability.

Digging into the details on Portfolio EV, Hart is currently listed at -120 on PointsBet for under 12.5 points, and though that threshold drops to 11.5 on Hard Rock, the -105 are favorable odds. We can see that the math indicates this is a terrific 10.0% ROI for Points Bet and a stellar 7.0% on Hard Rock. By comparison Rebet and Pinnacle are posting odds of -139 and -147 for under 11.5 points, which equate to NEGATIVE 5.3% to 7.1% expected ROI.

Let Portfolio EV do the heavy lifting, pitting the books against each other and finding the best values from a top-down betting approach.
