OwnersBox NFL DFS Strategy: Top Quarterbacks

Joe Burrow, $6,200

Things didn’t go as planned for Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. The Cleveland Browns dominated the defending AFC North champs in a 24-3 rout. Burrow and company will look to put up their first touchdown of the season this week when they host the Baltimore Ravens. They’ve had one of the most explosive passing attacks in the NFL over the last few seasons, so there’s every reason to look their way for this Sunday’s OwnersBox NFL DFS slate.

Burrow is projectsing for 20.13 fantasy points on OwnersBox, making him the third highest value at the quarterback position. He’s also the third highest projected in raw points, right behind Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. The difference is Burrow’s price tag, which at $6,200 is $1000 cheaper than Allen and $1,200 less than Mahomes.

There was a similar argument for Burrow on last week’s slate. He’s priced right and so are his targets. Burrow is currently garnering 21.9% ownership. His main target, Ja’Marr Chase is picking up 10.3% ownership. A healthy dose of lineups will have those two rostered in tandem. However, Chase is a top-10 value play at the receiver spot, as is the Bengals’ third receiver Tyler Boyd. Like last week, Boyd makes for a solid spend down, low owned attachment to Burrow. He can help your lineups avoid the heavier owned combos of Burrow-Chase, in addition to Tee Higgins. OwnersBox DFS players can also utilize Irv Smith Jr. in Burrow stacks. Smith is projected for 8.19 fantasy points and is a top tight end value.

Brock Purdy, $6,200

Sunday in Pittsburgh was the Brock Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk show. The second-year signal caller found Aiyuk twice in the back of the end zone and played his typical consistent, no mistakes role at the quarterback position in route to a thirty point win over the Steelers. Purdy isn’t flashy, but he gets the job done. The 49ers have a 24.5 implied team total this week against the Los Angeles Rams. If Purdy gets to three or more touchdowns again he’ll make for an excellent play on Sunday’s NFL DFS main slate.

Stokastic has Purdy projected for an average of 17.48 fantasy points, making him the next best value play at the quarterback position after Burrow. Despite the projection and value, the field is currently only expected to own Purdy at an 8% rate. The huge gap makes Purdy an excellent GPP play.

In addition to Purdy’s individual value, he can be rostered alongside Deebo Samuel. While Samuel often gets there on the ground, he’s utilized plenty in the passing game to add correlation to Purdy stacks. Samuel is the fifth highest value play on the board for Sunday’s DFS main slate. He’s pulling 17% ownership, but a lot of that seems to be as a one off, at least at the moment. His $5,500 price tag is hard to ignore, but you could always go with Christian McCaffrey, as well. McCaffrey comes in at $7,600 but is a strong point-per-dollar play. He’s plenty affordable if you’re using cheaper options like Purdy or even in the same onslaught stack as Deebo Samuel.

Baker Mayfield, $6,000

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers proved their doubters wrong with a Week 1 win against the Minnesota Vikings. Baker Mayfield wasn’t Tom Brady, but he did enough to help his team win. Mayfield found Mike Evans for one of his first of two touchdowns, hitting Trey Palmer on his second. He spread the ball around evenly to his top targets. Evans had six catches Chris Godwin caught five balls.

Evans and Godwin should have a good shot to to boost their productivity in Week 2. The Bucs will host the Chicago Bears, who struggled mightily on both sides of the ball last week. Mayfield projects for 16.79 fantasy points making him a solid spend-down option at the QB spot. He is picking up a lot of ownership at 17.7%, but the price point allows you to do a lot with the rest of your lineup.

The majority of Bucs stacks are going to use Chris Godwin, who is also picking up 18.8% ownership. However, Mike Evans is currently at less than half that number. Keep an eye out on Evans’ ownership, which at the moment is just 7.3% but could even out with Godwin. It’s a situation to monitor for value and upside for OwnersBox NFL DFS for Week 2.

Trevor Lawrence, $6,700

The Jacksonville Jaguars took care of business against the Indianapolis Colts last week. Their win wasn’t spectacular, but they got the job done. They’ll have a much tougher task in Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The biggest bright spot for the Jags was Calvin Ridley who racked up catches and yardage in his return from suspension. His rapport with Trevor Lawrence was noticeable, at least the coaches thought so. Former Jags’ number one wideout Christian Kirk was almost nowhere to be seen.

Lawrence is projected for 18.57 fantasy points on OwnersBox this Sunday to go along with 15.2% ownership. At $6,700 he ranks just below Mayfield as a value play for this slate. The issue with Lawrence are that his stacking pieces aren’t cheap. Ridley comes with a flat $7,000 and Kirk is $5,300 which is pretty high for a receiver that did not get much usage in Week 1. Evan Engram is $4,800 at tight end and Travis Etienne Jr. is $6,400 in the running back spot. Nevertheless, not one of those players is garnering much ownership either.

We’ll run the sims later in the week, but expect Lawrence to show up predominantly in single stacks given the prices of these guys, but we’ll let the numbers dictate that when we crunch them. For now, Lawrence looks like a nice value quarerback and top play to go along with some contrarian attachments.
