RBC Heritage PGA DFS Picks: Jordan Spieth to Continue Masters Form

Following the first major of the season, next on the schedule is the RBC Heritage, which will be played at Harbour Town Golf Links (par 71, 7,191 yards, poa trivialis greens) in Hilton Head, S.C. The Pete Dye design has been the only course to ever host an RBC Heritage, and Jordan Spieth (-13) is the defending champion. This week, the RBC Heritage’s field consists of 143 players – including 39 of the top-50 golfers in the world – and there will be a normal top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds. With narrow fairways, 54 bunkers and small greens, Harbour Town is a classic, short Dye design that favors accuracy over distance. With this venue presenting some of the smallest putting surfaces these players will face all season, not only do they need to be dialed in with irons to contend, but they also need to be crafty around the greens. During his victory at Harbour Town last season, Spieth became the third RBC Heritage winner over the last four years to finish the tournament top 10 in both strokes gained on approach and strokes gained around the green. Spieth also led his field in efficiency on the par 5’s, making him the fourth straight champion of this event to rank top 10 in the metric.

Leverage scores are a product of comparing a player’s ownership versus their salary-weighted odds to finish in the top 6 of the tournament.

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 2nd, FanDuel: 75th

With most of the best players on the PGA Tour teeing it up at the RBC Heritage, Stokastic is expecting Spieth to get overlooked — especially on DraftKings, where he is slated for around 5% ownership – making the defending champion an elite GPP target. Spieth finished fourth at the Masters last week, including a closing round 6-under 66. At Augusta National, he gained strokes in every major category and tied for the most birdies. Spieth has now collectively gained strokes on approach and around the green in six straight starts at standard stroke play events, earning four top-6 finishes during this stretch.

In this type of form, Spieth should contend for another win at Harbour Town, where he has four top-12 finishes in six appearances.

Justin Suh

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 6th, FanDuel: 1st

While Suh has never competed at Harbour Town before, he is far too cheap for his chances of making the cut. Plus, Stokastic is projecting him for less than 3% ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel. Suh has made 12 consecutive cuts at standard stroke play tournaments while gaining strokes with his irons in eight of those starts.

Impressively, Suh has four top-20 finishes in his last six starts, including a season-best sixth at TPC Sawgrass for THE PLAYERS Championship, which like Harbour Town is a Dye designed course with poa trivialis greens. Suh clearly has the tools to thrive at a tricky venue like Harbour Town and he should have a solid showing in his RBC Heritage debut this week.

Tyler Duncan

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 22nd, FanDuel: 21st

Duncan has a top-30 finish at two of the last three editions of the RBC Heritage and returns to Harbour Town this week in encouraging form. In his last six starts, Duncan has advanced to the weekend at five events and has been in the mix for a win twice, with third-place finishes at both the Honda Classic and Corales Puntacana Championship.

Duncan has gained strokes on approach at four events in a row and is a strong bet to make the cut this weekend, which would be immense return at his low salaries. For both DraftKings and FanDuel, Stokastic is projecting Duncan to be less than 3% owned.

Denny McCarthy

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 45th, FanDuel: 37th

McCarthy is an excellent, contrarian option this week, with him hovering around 5% expected ownership for both DraftKings and FanDuel in Stokastic’s projections. He finished top 20 in three of his last four starts at standard stroke play events by gaining strokes on approach and around the green during all three of these high finishes.

If McCarthy can carry over this momentum as a ball striker and scrambler to Harbour Town, he has the potential for a top-25 finish this week. McCarthy is 3-for-4 making the cut here, including a 13th-place finish two years ago.
