Week 6 Sunday Night Football NFL DFS Showdown Picks
The 2-3 Seahawks travel east to the steel city to play the Steelers, also 2-3, in a battle between two of the most injury-riddled squads in the sport. The Seahawks just placed quarterback Russell Willson and starting running back Chris Carson on injured reserve, while Steelers lost wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster to season-ending shoulder surgery. Pittsburgh currently ranks 25th in the NFL in offensive efficiency, and yet finds itself favored by nearly a touchdown, with an implied team total of 24 points — a number it has reached only once this season. That’s what happens when a team without its current quarterback or running back, traveling east, no less, comes to town, I suppose. This game still has mild shootout potential, but the probability of a production-heavy game script is drastically reduced due to the Seahawks’ injuries.
Tyler Lockett is the Best Value Play on DraftKings
Lockett earned 10 targets in Week 5 from the combination of Wilson and Geno Smith, and should be utilized underneath and in intermediate routes as a means of creating easy completions for the “new” starter. He hasn’t found the end zone since Week 2, but still commands a healthy 25% of the Seahawks red zone targets. He’s the highest projected Seahawks’ skill player this Sunday. Of all wideouts projected for five or more points, Lockett has the highest value ranking of any receiver on either side.
D.K. Metcalf Should Still Command a Massive Target Share
Metcalf and Lockett have combined to receive over 50% of the Seahawks’ targets and over 70% of the team’s air yards, and that concentrated workload in the receiving game should remain with Smith at the helm. Metcalf caught a touchdown from Smith a week ago, and has earned five-plus targets in every game this season. His ceiling is lower with Smith under-center, but due to his hyper-athletic play, Metcalf still has big-play and multi-touchdown upside, just as he did with Wilson at the helm.
Najee Harris is the only Bellcow Back on the Slate
Harris’ salary, particularly on DraftKings, is certainly lofty, but he’s the only running back we can guarantee a massive workload for this Sunday. Even Seahawks’ starter Alex Collins could cede more snaps to DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer. But Harris’ workload is locked in, as he currently ranks No. 1 in the NFL in snap share and opportunity share. He’s seen at least 22 total opportunities in three straight contests, and his five targets in Week 5 was tied for his lowest total since Week 2. With Smith-Schuster no longer available for short-area targets, Harris receiving game opportunity should rise once again, especially against Seattle’s porous secondary.
Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool are Excellent Tournament Captains
Johnson saw a season-low two targets in Week 5, but still managed to catch both, including one 50-yarder in the end zone that completely saved his day for fantasy football. It was the first game all season Johnson hadn’t seen double-digit looks, but it also proved Johnson can get to a big fantasy performance via multiple avenues, whether it be through efficiency or volume. Chase Claypool also caught a touchdown last week, and has now earned five-plus targets in four straight games. With Seattle ranking 27th in yards allowed per pass attempt, playing Johnson or Claypool at Captain or MVP, then pairing him with Ben Roethlisberger, is one of my favorite ways to begin lineups on the slate.
James Washington should Become an Every-Down Receiver
Washington, who requested a trade earlier this off-season, will be thrust into a starting role, and should be the Steelers’ third wide receiver for the remainder of the season due to Smith-Schuster’s absence. Most encouraging for Washington was that he was already earning playing time prior to the injury, as he has averaged an 82% snap share over Pittsburgh’s last two outings, and has seen five targets in each of those games. A constant deep-threat, Washington has a chance to make an impact with just a few catches, and despite a mediocre six-point projection, as the lowest-salary every-down receiver from either team he’s one my favorite plays on the slate.
The Bottom Line
Even though Smith played admirably in relief of Wilson in Week 5, it’s extremely hard to imagine him being dominant in this contest, especially against a Steelers defense that, though not as dominant as in 2020, still ranks 14th in defensive efficiency and 13th in points allowed per play. They should have plenty of chances to generate pressure, and if successful, the Steeler defense could force multiple Smith to turn the ball over multiple times, especially when the Seahawks have limited check-down (and blitz-protection) options with Carson out of the lineup. On the other side, Roethlisberger has as good a chance as he’ll have all season to turn in a 20-plus-fantasy-point performance against Seattle’s 27th-ranked pass defense. If Roethlisberger does his part, the Steelers should have a relatively easy time getting a victory this Sunday night.
