What is an NFL Survivor Pool?

There are several variations of the survivor pool format, but the most basic and common one is each Week everyone in the pool must select one team to win a game straight up, not against the spread. If the team wins, that player survives the week; if that team loses, the player is eliminated. The twist is that teams can only be used once, making it increasingly difficult as the season goes on. The pool ends when there is one player left.

Week 12 NFL Survivor Pool Picks Recap

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas was just behind the Eagles for last week’s most popular selection. They were struggling with major skill-position injuries, with both Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb out and Ezekiel Elliott at less than full strength. The recommendation was to play Dallas only if one of the receivers was healthy, which proved wise, with Dallas losing in overtime on Thanksgiving. While Dallas put up 33 points, the move to fade them proved correct regardless.

New England Patriots

New England was not very popular, likely due to having been used already by most players, but they were a solid choice. They took care of business against the depleted Titans, allowing only 13 points despite over 250 yards rushing against. New England scored midway through the first quarter and led the rest of the way.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens were the fourth-most popular team and squeaked by against the Browns despite four Lamar Jackson interceptions. That is a hard feat to accomplish, but so is limiting Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt to only 36 yards combined on 15 carries. All the turnovers made for a stressful Monday night, but Baltimore had the lead throughout this one.

Week 13 NFL Survivor Pool Picks

Teams Already Used: San Francisco 49ers (W), Cleveland Browns (W), Denver Broncos (W), Cincinnati Bengals (W), Baltimore Ravens (W), Indianapolis Colts (W), Arizona Cardinals (W), Kansas City Chiefs (W), Dallas Cowboys (L, Switched to Miami after the fact), Buffalo Bills (W), Titans (L, switched to Buccaneers after the fact), New England Patriots (W)

With the column losing in Weeks 9 and 11, moving forward the picks for those weeks will pivot to Miami and Tampa Bay, respectively, for continuity’s sake.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

While this column has already used the Buccaneers, they are a great choice this week. They are 11-point favorites against the Falcons and should be highly motivated to keep pace with the NFC’s best teams for a first-round bye. They also have the highest future value in Awesemo’s NFL Survivor Optimizer Tool, but they are still playable if the other big favorites are unavailable. This is the point in the year where just getting through is the only thing to worry about, particularly with all of the big upsets eliminating most survivors.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams are the biggest favorites on the week as they host the 2-9 Jaguars. After looking like the best team in the league, the Rams have lost three straight and are legitimately in danger of missing the playoffs, which means they are desperate for a win in a perfect spot to right the ship. Awesemo’s NFL Survivor Optimizer Tool does not project them to be favored by more than a touchdown the rest of the way.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are the last of the double-digit favorites. Kansas City hosts the Broncos and needs this game to stay in the AFC West lead. This one feels like a bit of a trap — Denver has played well as of late, and the Chiefs have had their struggles. Still, it is in Arrowhead, which is a big boost to Kansas City. They have a fairly tough schedule down the stretch, as they do not play a team with a losing record the rest of the way. They host the 5-5-1 Steelers in Week 16, though, which is another good spot for them.

Week 13 NFL Survivor Pick: Los Angeles Rams

There are three teams favored by 10 or more in Week 13, and only the Rams are available. Fortunately, using them this week does not give up much. This is the best remaining chance for them, which cannot be said about the other top options this week. However, any of the big favorites are solid choices this week, though Kansas City seems like the scariest. Both the Colts and Cardinals are fine picks as well, though both have already been used in this column.
