With just four NHL games for the main DFS slate today, some players will have higher ownership percentages for NHL DFS picks. Let’s try to quickly examine some that hold merit and a few sleeper plays that will be important today.

NHL DFS Picks Today | October 23
Goaltender
James Reimer (Sharks vs. Flyers): $7,500 DraftKings | $7,200 FanDuel
Reimer is far-and-away the best goaltending option out of today’s four-game slate, as he is simply underpriced due to the fact that his San Jose Sharks are 1-6-0, while the Philadelphia Flyers are 4-1-0 and is quietly in a sneaky good spot.
The Sharks have suffered through a tough start to the season, beginning 0-5-0. However, San Jose played much more respectably over the last two games, allowing just three combined goals to the Rangers and Devils and managing a surprising overtime result against New York. Contrarily, Philadelphia is likely overvalued based on its 4-1-0 record that has come with a very poor expected goal percentage.
The Sharks’ improved defensive play should continue Sunday, and since Reimer was actually a slightly better than breakeven starting option last season, that could mean a win in a lower-scoring game.
Defender
Filip Hronek (Ducks vs. Red Wings): $4,600 DraftKings | $4,200 FanDuel
Hronek has quietly taken up the quarterback spot on Detroit’s top power play unit, which makes sense considering his spectacular shot from the point and steady puck movement.
The Red Wings get a great matchup Sunday against an Anaheim team that is allowing the most shots in the league per 60 (41.05) and 4.40 goals against per game. At $4,200 on FanDuel and $4,600 on DraftKings, Hronek has spectacular value.
Erik Karlsson (Sharks vs. Flyers): $5,400 DraftKings | $5,200 FanDuel
Karlsson has averaged 10.4 fantasy points per game this season, but Sunday sets up as a good spot to surpass that number. The early numbers of the Flyers defense do not suggest this is a brilliant play, but it’s very early into the NHL season and looking at team versus position matchups holds little relevance. San Jose should control a lot of the play today and manage a solid output against Felix Sandstrom.
Karlsson is still highly involved on a relatively thin Sharks defense and will skate top line on the top power play today. He has a relatively high floor with some serious upside in this matchup in turn.

Center
Tomas Hertl (Sharks vs. Flyers): $5,000 DraftKings | $6,000 FanDuel
If playing Karlsson on the Sharks back end, Hertl and Timo Meier are certainly reasonable options. Hertl has had a quiet start to the campaign, with just 2 points through six games, and that is going to keep his ownership very low in this spot. However, that trend is not likely to hold considering the skillset Hertl possesses, and today is a good time to buy low. He could be the kind of guy to put lineups in the top percentile of GPP tournaments.
Dominik Kubalik/Dylan Larkin Stack: $11,100 DraftKings | $11,800 FanDuel
As alluded to above, Anaheim is allowing the most shots on goal per 60 this season and the fifth-most goals against. That issue will not clear up anytime soon, with some struggling veterans on the back end and an altogether middling roster.
Kubalik has paced the Red Wings, with 5 points in four games. But more importantly, he has generated 4 points in two games and 3.5 shots on goal per game since Tyler Bertuzzi’s injury, which opened up a spot on Larkin’s wing for Kubalik.
The duo should thrive in in Sunday’s matchup at home versus Anaheim, and this is a really strong play in turn, with Kubalik’s price still not currently reflecting his new role accurately.
Sleeper
Anthony Beauvillier: $2,700 DraftKings
Beauvillier is in a sneaky good matchup against a Florida team that will likely eventually allow more goals against, as it plays with an altogether sub-par defensive core. This price is too low for a legitimate second-line player, and Beauvillier is a particularly good sleeper for those spending up on some of the top forwards.
