Cole K’s Best Golf Bets: 2022 British Open Championship Picks & Predictions

Cole Karas

The 2022 British Open Championship is set to get underway at the Old Course at St. Andrews at 1:35 a.m. ET Thursday morning. The final major of the 2022 season marks the 150th Open Championship, which will feature a phenomenal field of players. With the Claret Jug up for grabs, there are plenty of notable golfers who are in good form heading into the weekend. Although the outright market holds plenty of value, bettors should also look beyond the outright bets and focus in on top-20s and tournament matchups that holds strong value. The leaderboard should be stacked with talent come Sunday, and with so many golfers in prime position to make a run this weekend, the 2022 Open Championship will not disappoint. Be sure to check out OddsShopper, where you can find the best value on various golf markets both pre-tournament and throughout the weekend. Now let’s get into the best golf bets and British Open predictions.

Best Golf Bets: 2022 British Open Championship Picks

British Open Outright Winner Bet: Jordan Spieth

To begin, outright bets present a great opportunity for a few players this weekend. Jordan Spieth comes in with confidence knowing he has performed well at the Open Championship over the years. Since 2015, Spieth has a win, a runner-up, one shot back of a playoff and a ninth-place finish, proving his ability to be in contention on Sunday. He is arguably the best links golfer on tour, and because this style of golf plays into his hands so well, +1800 odds is too hard to pass up. With the course featuring rolling hills and slopes around the green, Spieth will be able to use his excellent short game to put himself in prime positions to secure birdies. Spieth is third in strokes gained around the green while also being top 10 in par-4 scoring, which will help him, considering there are 14 par-4 holes at St. Andrews. Spieth played well last weekend at the Scottish Open without being in top form on Sunday, and if he can clean up a few mental errors, he should solidify himself in contention throughout the weekend.

British Open Outright Winner Bet: Cameron Smith

The second and last outright bet to lock in is Cameron Smith at +2500. These odds are a little bit too long on Smith, and with that they present tremendous value if he can round back into championship form. To start the season, Smith was red hot and seemed to be in contention every Sunday afternoon. He has cooled off since then, but heading into Open Championship weekend, his style of play should lead to him regaining his early-season form. If Smith finds consistency off the tee, he will be able to put himself in prime positions to score low on the many par 4’s, similar to Spieth. The links-style golf will allow Smith to be creative around the green, and after coming off of a solid Scottish Open where he tied for 10th, he is in prime position to take a step into contention at St. Andrews.

Best British Open Top 20 Bets

The top-20 market is one of the best ways to find value in major golf tournaments. This weekend, two golfers who stick out as tremendous value are Shane Lowry (+130) and Tony Finau (+175). Lowry, a former Open Championship winner, has quietly put together a strong season, and if his putter can hold up, he should be able to use his scrambling and his ability to find the fairway to propel himself into the top 20. The odds are +130 for a guy who thrives in this style of golf and has seven top-20s to his name already this year.

On the other hand, Finau comes into this weekend with strong results at the Open Championship in the past. Finau has played in five total Open Championships in his career without a missed cut and the worst finishing position of 27th. Finau has been in fine form as of late, where he is coming off of three top-20 finishes in his last four tournaments, including a second- and a fourth-place finish. The +175 odds for Finau at St. Andrews in his current form makes this one of the strongest value bets of the whole weekend.

British Open Championship Prediction: Tony Finau Top 20 (+175) & Shane Lowry Top 20 (+130)

Best British Open Matchup Bet

To wrap up, one strong full-tournament matchup play is Tommy Fleetwood taking down Tyrrell Hatton over 72 holes (-120). Fleetwood is fresh off of a tie for fourth at the Scottish Open, and as he heads into this weekend, he has placed himself in a good spot to continue his consistent play. When looking at odds to make the cut alone, Fleetwood is hovering around -360, while Hatton is around -240. Although this does not tell the whole story, the play is the more consistent golfer who has a significantly better chance at playing on the weekend. Fleetwood comes into the weekend with four top-10s this season, and he ranks 10th in strokes gained around the green, which will be vital in his success at St. Andrews. After finishing runner-up to Lowry three years ago, Fleetwood is looking to get over the hump in his eighth appearance at the Open Championship. Although he does not need to win the tournament, he should have himself in contention and ultimately beat Hatton over the weekend.

2022 British Open Championship Prediction: Tommy Fleetwood OVER Tyrrell Hatton (-120)
