Cole K’s Best Golf Bets: 2022 U.S. Open Picks & Predictions

Welcome to 2022 U.S. Open week, one of the best weeks of the year and golf’s third major of the season. The tournament is taking place at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., and will get underway Thursday morning. With everything happening in the golf world, it will be nice to get back to major golf at a course that will present the field with plenty of challenges along the way. The par-70 course is 7,264 yards and will feature two par 5’s, four par 3’s and 12 par 4’s. U.S. Open week always presents bettors with various pre-tournament markets. With that being said, let’s dig into a few outright U.S. Open predictions, a top-20, a top-40 and a tournament matchup, that hold great value. OddsShopper has you taken care of for all of the weekend needs with the best U.S. Open golf bets listed by ROI, win percentage and hold value.

2022 U.S. Open Golf Picks & Betting Predictions

Justin Thomas to Win 2022 U.S. Open

Justin Thomas is fresh off of a fantastic weekend at the Canadian Open where he was outplayed by Rory McIlroy in a tremendous Sunday round. Thomas has been playing great golf this year, and after a thrilling win over Will Zalatoris at the PGA Championship, he is looking for back-to-back major titles. Thomas has elite iron play and is currently third in strokes gained tee to green while being an impressive sixth on tour in strokes gained on approach. Thomas is arguably playing the best golf of his career, and although +1200 may not be the best value on the board, it is a bet that is hard to ignore at his current form. Pairing his iron play with his hot putter as of late will have him in the mix on Sunday, and with The Country Club demanding a stellar short game and precision off the tee, Thomas is in great position to secure his first U.S. Open title.

Joaquin Niemann to Win 2022 U.S. Open

It is smart in major tournaments to have two outright bets to root for over the weekend, and although it is easy to pick two of the top few golfers, look for longer odds with the second choice. The golfer to turn to this weekend is Joaquin Niemann at +3500. Niemann has shown a well-rounded game this year, which has led him to four straight top-25 finishes. Niemann is currently ranked eighth in strokes gained tee to green while showing impressive flashes in both his short game and putting as of late. He was in contention at the Memorial earlier this month, which led to a tie for third, and guys who have shown flashes in recent tournaments are the targets for longshot bets. Niemann has all the tools to win a U.S. Open, and if he can continue his improved short game and pair that with his fantastic play both off the tee and with his irons, this could be his true coming-out party on Sunday afternoon at The Country Club.

Best U.S. Open Top 20s & Top 40 Bets

The top-20 and top-40 markets present great value when betting major tournaments, especially with two specific guys. Shane Lowry has been one of the most consistent players on the planet and currently holds +140 odds to finish top 20. This is one of the more valuable lines when factoring in the form Lowry has been in as of late. Lowry has finished inside the top 20 in 7 of his last 10 starts, which includes three finishes inside the top five. His game presents such strong accuracy, which leads to hitting greens in regulation and leaving him in great spots to avoid bogeys. At The Country Club, staying out of the deep rough is something he will avoid, which will in turn allow him to be a factor throughout the weekend. The top-40 markets are a little bit tougher to gauge because so many players have very juiced odds, but Davis Riley stands out over the rest at -115 to finish inside the top 40. Riley has been playing some of the best golf on tour and has five straight finishes inside the top 20, which included the PGA Championship. With such a loaded field this weekend, the top-40 bet has stronger value than the top-20 bet. Riley is a superior iron player, and if he can avoid blow-up holes, he should be inside the top 40 come Sunday afternoon.

Best U.S. Open Matchup Bet

To wrap up, a tournament matchup to focus in on is Xander Schauffele to outplay and beat Cameron Smith at -125 odds. Schauffele has finished top 10 in five straight U.S. Opens, while Smith is coming off of a missed cut in last season’s tournament at Torrey Pines. Accuracy off the tee and hitting greens in regulation are key components to being in contention this weekend, and when making a tournament matchup bet, the better play is usually the more consistent golfer, which is Schauffele. Schauffele ranks 45th in fairways hit relative to the field, while Smith is all the way down at 159th. At only -125 juice, Schauffele is far more consistent off the tee and should avoid big numbers on the scorecard, which will have in him contention on Sunday and ultimately outlasting Smith.

Best U.S. Open Golf Bet This Week: Xander Schauffele over Cameron Smith (-125)
