2022 British Open Predictions & Best Golf Betting Picks

In this new weekly article, Stokastic golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 2022 Open Championship.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Joaquin Niemann

Outright 50-1 (DraftKings)

The Open Championship can be a difficult tournament to bet, as the wind and weather usually play a starring role. Keep an eye on that as the tee times get underway since it can be a huge factor in how easy or hard the course plays. Right now, I am playing it straight up and believe there will be plenty of birdies available. If so, this sets it up for Joaquin Niemann, who I seem to bet every week when he is sitting at odds like 50-1. He is too talented, already dominated a major-level field at the Genesis and finished 16th last week in Scotland. He can go low if needed, and if St Andrews doesn’t have wind to defend itself, expect the winner to be a pure scorer like Niemann. At 50-1, I’ll gladly take a shot he gets the right conditions and gets in the mix at the 150th Open Championship.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Patrick Cantlay

Outright: +2600 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

With Patrick Cantlay available at nearly double the odds of players like Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele, I will side with him once more in the final major as my preferred bet at the top of the board. He shot four rounds of even par or better last week and even matched eventual winner Schauffele (whom he carried to a team title back in April) with a weekend score of 4 under par at the Scottish Open. Cantlay’s last four starts now read as 3rd, 14th, 13th, 4th, and that form looks eerily similar to the form 2021 Open Champion Collin Morikawa brought into St. George’s last season. As we saw last fall, Cantlay’s putter can get hot enough to win an outright birdie fest, and if you’re looking for a stat to hang your hat on, he’s also been one of the top scramblers from 30 yards and out on the PGA Tour the last couple of seasons. Plus, there are potentially four or more drivable par 4’s at St. Andrews. Cantlay has been extremely close over his last few starts to some big rounds, and at a much better price than his peers this week (whom he’s outperformed at various points this year), he’s the player I’d feel best about backing from the top 20 or so at this year’s Open.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Brandon Wu

Outright: 400-1 | Top 5: 65-1 | Top 10: 30-1

This pick is likely one you won’t find many other places, but it deserves to be. It’s back-to-back weeks now on the PGA Tour that the oddsmakers priced golfers with a ton of potential, but not a lot of results, much higher than they should have been. That started with Chris Gotterup at the John Deere Classic, with a 150-1 outright and 30-1 top-five number, followed by Joohyung Kim at 400-1 outright for the Scottish Open and 65-1 for the top five. Both hit, coming in third place and providing massive returns. We are going back to that strategy this week, as Brandon Wu has all the potential in the world. He came out of college in the class that featured Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, and Matthew Wolff and competed with them each and every week. His path to the PGA Tour wasn’t quite as easy as the other three, however, having to go through the Korn Ferry Tour to earn his keep. He did so and finally found himself playing in the biggest events of the year. When Wu is in form, he competes anywhere and gets nuclear hot with the putter. That confidence should move over to this week at St. Andrews, where his eachway odds are very appealing. If he makes the cut, expect to see him inside the first two pages of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.

Eytan Shander’s Pick: Max Homa

Outright: 50-1 (BetMGM Sportsbook) | Top 10: 35-1 | Top 20: 17-1 (DraftKings Sportsbook)

It’s all about the wind and weather at St. Andrews, as otherwise it’s a fairly beatable course. Driving distance, strokes gained on approach and avoiding three-putts are key to survival. Looking at this star-studded field, Max Homa fits nicely in both distance off the tee and lag putting. Homa also strikes the ball as well as anyone right now on tour and in the current field at the Open. It’s also difficult to ignore the year Homa is having, making 12 top-25s in 19 events, with four top-10s and two victories. He tied for 40th in his lone appearance at the Open Championship last year at Royal St. George’s and is a fantastic candidate to ladder this year.

Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Jamie Donaldson

Outright: +42000 | Top 20: +1400 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

Let’s start with this right off the bat: This is the deepest flier that made my card, and this is in zero way a vote of confidence that Jamie Donaldson could win this event. We’re simply playing value here, as we’re talking about a 46-year-old pro from Wales that is only in this Open Championship by way of a single sixth-place finish at last week’s Scottish Open. But that made it a second consecutive top-20 for Donaldson, who actually finished a respectable tie for 20th at the DP World Tour’s Irish Open. And going through some finishes in the past calendar year, it’s pretty remarkable to see a tie for second at the BMW PGA Championship in 2021 and a tie for eighth at the Betfred British Masters this past May fall so under the radar. Put all of these decent results together, and I legitimately find the vet’s +1400 number to top-20 one of the best bits of value on the board this week.
