Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions & Golf Betting Picks

In this new weekly article, Stokastic golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Cam Davis | Get Your FREE $200 NOW

Outright 33-1 (BetMGM)

I backed Cam Davis in the 3M Open last week, and despite the seven strokes gained tee to green, Davis was unable to really threaten the leaderboard. The 16th-place finish was a fine result, and if the putter had been better, he easily could have found himself in the hunt. He now goes back to the site of his lone PGA Tour win and a course that clearly suits his aggressive style every time he tees it up. Davis thrives on scoreable courses and will get plenty of par 5’s and short par 4’s to do damage. Players have won back-to-back at the same event, and for 33-1, I’m willing to back Davis to defend his Rocket Mortgage title.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Denny McCarthy | Get Your FREE $200 NOW

Outright +4200 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

I went back and forth between Denny McCarthy and Chris Kirk for this spot (who is near the same in price) but ultimately sided with McCarthy given his ability to go nuclear with the putter. He is well known for his prowess on the greens (first in strokes gained putting in the field over the last 50 rounds), but he’s started to show some higher-end ball striking of late as well. He ranked 17th in strokes gained on approach at the U.S. Open, where he finished seventh overall, and he gained a career-best 6.3 strokes ball striking at the John Deere (sixth-place finish). McCarthy has come close to winning before on a Donald Ross design, landing a ninth at the Sedgefield in 2020, and it would not be overly shocking if he parlayed the momentum of that U.S. Open top-10 into his first career win at the Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club. At a venue where two of the first three winners have gained over seven strokes putting for the week, I think the 40-1 odds available on McCarthy are quite fair given the form he’s shown of late.

Eytan Shander’s Pick: Troy Merritt | Get Your FREE $200 NOW

While the tour has only stopped here for three years, it’s worth noting which golfers seem to prefer a certain track at any event. The two names that will pop up this week when it comes to any horse for this course are Kevin Kisner and Troy Merritt. The value is much lower where the books have Kisner listed — a combination of other names around him and the risk associated with solely relying on his familiarity with Detroit. There’s a much better number for Merritt, who is 10th in the field in total strokes gained. Merritt is only one of nine players in the field to finish top 25 multiple times. He’s 33rd on tour in strokes gained putting, and combined with his strong course history, that makes him a far better player than the 66-1 odds would indicate.
