PGA DFS Optimizer Picks: Low-Owned Jordan Spieth Can Win You GPPs At BMW Championship (Wednesday, August 17)

The PGA Tour hosts the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club (par 71, 7,534 yards, bentgrass greens) this week. This will be the course’s PGA debut, and only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings have qualified for this no-cut event. Below are some of the top PGA DFS picks for the BMW Championship, according to Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool.

PGA DFS GPP Picks: The BMW Championship

Wilmington is a long, tree-lined course that should be a difficult test for these players. In addition to this venue’s overwhelming length for a par 71, there are 91 bunkers, the rough is thick, and the greens are enormous. Without question, targeting top-notch drivers will be a must. Strong putters are also key given the size of the greens, as is being efficient on 400- to 450-yard par 4’s, as 6 of the 11 winners at Wilmington land in this range.

Jordan Spieth

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 3rd, FanDuel: 9th

On the heels of a missed cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Spieth is likely not going to get much attention. Missing the weekend at TPC Southwind was a letdown, but there are many reasons to expect a bounce-back performance. Spieth showed encouraging form prior to last week, finishing 10th at the Genesis Scottish Open and eighth at the Open Championship while gaining strokes in every major category at both events. His driver has been arguably his best club this season, ranking in the top 40 in both strokes gained off the tee and driving distance, and Spieth ranks 11th in par-4 performance. Furthermore, he hasn’t finished worse than 18th in four starts on bentgrass this year, and he has finished 2nd, 1st and 10th following a missed cut. Spieth has finished 16th or better in five of his eight tries at a BMW Championship and is a savvy, high-end pivot this week.

Corey Conners

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 34th, FanDuel: 51st

At a course that favors strong off-tee players, Conners is a no-brainer. He has been one of the best drivers on the PGA Tour this season, only failing to gain strokes off the tee once in 25 starts. Conners ranks fourth in strokes gained off the tee. Another skill that sets him up perfectly for Wilmington is his efficiency on 400- to 450-yard par 4’s; Conners ranks 10th in strokes gained on this specific length of par 4 over the last 50 rounds. His putting has also greatly improved after a rocky start to the season, gaining strokes with his flat stick in four of his past six starts.

Conners has recorded two top-25 finishes in three appearances at the BMW Championship and has 11 top-25 finishes this season. He is projected for modest ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel, according to Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool.

Emiliano Grillo

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 2nd, FanDuel: 1st

Throughout his career, Grillo has been known as an elite ball striker but a poor putter. However, as of late he has been able to combine his stellar tee-to-green game with some impressive work on the greens, resulting in some great results. In his last four starts, Grillo has finished 2nd, 2nd and 31st and missed one cut. At all three of these events in which he made the weekend, Grillo gained strokes tee to green, off the tee and with his flat stick. It is also worth noting that both these recent runner-up finishes have come at par 71s with bentgrass greens, which is what he will see at the BMW Championship. With Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool slating him for sub-5% ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel, Grillo is a must-have for GPPs this week.

Andrew Putnam

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 37th, FanDuel: 37th

After a missed cut at the Barracuda Championship, Putnam has strung together three consecutive top-30 finishes, most recently with a season-best fifth place at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Over the course of this three-event stretch, he has shot under par in 9 of his 12 rounds, including seven straight coming into this week. Putnam gained strokes off the tee and with his putter at three of these past four tournaments, and he ranks seventh in both bogeys avoided and strokes gained on 400- to 450-yard par 4’s over the last 24 rounds. Putnam vaulted himself up to No. 48 in the FedEx Cup standings with his performance last week and will need another stellar showing to get himself inside the top 30. Priced $200 off the minimum on both DraftKings and FanDuel, and with sub-5% projected ownership, Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool has Putnam as an incredible punt play for the BMW Championship.
