A three-week stay within a five-hour radius in Texas and Oklahoma comes to an end as the PGA Tour starts to head east. The next four weeks will feature very strong fields, fun golf courses and two National Championships: The Canadian Open and the U.S. Open. But before that is Memorial Day, and the PGA Tour honors that by hosting the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The course and spot on the calendar have been the host of this event since the mid-1970s, one of the longest-standing tournaments on the PGA Tour. Tournament host Jack Nicklaus always brings a strong field, as a win here comes with extra benefits on tour. In fact, it is one of the strongest fields of the year that isn’t a major, falling just behind the Genesis Invitational. In this article, we will cover the course, players and preview the PGA DFS slate from a statistical perspective.

PGA DFS Golf Rankings, Stats & Predicted Scoring

PGA DFS Picks: The First Cut for the Memorial Tournament & Preview including Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and more!

All par 5’s are reachable here at Muirfield Village Golf Club, which should yield plenty of eagle looks this week. But as reachable as the par 5’s are, there are some brutal holes as well, including four holes on the back nine contributing to around 10% total of the DFS scoring.

2022 Memorial PGA DFS Player Preview

  • Number of golfers ranked inside the top 10 of the OWGR: 7
  • Number of golfers ranked inside the top 50 of the OWGR: 38
  • Strength of the field for a non-major (lower numbers represent a stronger field): No. 2

Course History at Muirfield Village Golf Club

In 2020, the tour hosted back-to-back events here at Muirfield Village — the usual Memorial Tournament and the Workday Challenge — so there are a few more results to cover than usual.

The most talked-about golfer over the last few years here has undoubtedly been Jon Rahm. He won the Memorial back in 2020 then followed it up with his dominant performance last year before being forced to withdraw after Round 3 due to testing positive for COVID-19. As such, his stats look a bit skewed from actual results. All told, he wasn’t going to lose an eight-stroke lead, and that would have appointed him the two-time winner of the event.

Next is Collin Morikawa, who has played Muirfield Village three times in the past two years, coming in first, 48th and second. There are only a few others in the field that have two top-10s in the past three tournaments here. Patrick Cantlay is one of those, finishing no worse than 35th in his six starts at the course, winning twice and recording two other top-10s. Patrick Reed makes it two Patricks that have played well here, as he’s working of off back-to-back top-10s at this course, coming in fifth and 10th in his last two starts. Morikawa, Rahm, Reed, Cantlay and Jason Day, who finished fourth and seventh in the two events here in 2020, are the only ones with multiple top-10s at this event in the last three outings.

That number trends upwards with results dating back to 2017 and moving the criteria from top 10 to top 20. This covers five tournaments. A few names that have at least two top-10s here in since 2017 are: Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele, Billy Horschel, Bryson DeChambeau, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Si Woo Kim, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Streelman and Rickie Fowler.

2021 Memorial Strokes Gained Review and Top 20 Leaderboard

For the second straight week, golfers that finished in the top 10 of the event actually lost strokes around the green on a cumulative basis, which is incredibly rare. This course is long with plenty of elevation changes, so golfers with length off the tee can gain a slight advantage here. However, this is a true “second shot” golf course where strokes gained on the approach is the most crucial statistic outside of strokes gained putting.

  • Strokes Gained Off the Tee: 0.32
  • Strokes Gained on Approach: 0.95
  • Strokes Gained Around the Green: -.05
  • Strokes Gained Putting: 1.15
  • DFS Points: 92
  • Average DFS Salary: $7,963
