PGA DFS Optimizer Picks: British Open Leverage Leaders for DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Lineups | 7/13

For the first time in seven years, the British Open will be held at the Old Course (par 72, 7,313 yards, fescue/bentgrass/poa mixed greens) of St Andrews this week. As always with majors, the DFS golf industry is offering some huge GPPs on DraftKings and FanDuel, and below are some of the top PGA DFS optimizer picks using Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool.

PGA DFS Optimal Picks for the British Open

In 2015, Zach Johnson (-15) secured the second major victory of his career at the Old Course, defeating Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman in a playoff. Unsurprisingly, given this is a rare par 72 with 14 par 4’s, Johnson was dominate on the par 4’s during his win at the Old Course, ranking second in par-4 efficiency for the tournament. Also, Johnson ranked second in average putts per round during his victory, and it is important to prioritize players who wit appealing form with their putters this week given the massive size of these greens at this links course. With the volatility of this major, putting a heavy weight on bogey avoidance is also a sharp strategy for the British Open. Of the last eight players to hoist the Claret Jug, eight have ranked seventh or better in least bogeys for the event. Lastly, with no trees at the Old Course and this track right near the coastline, wind always becomes a factor. As a result, it will be important to monitor the weather forecast very closely up until roster lock to see if either the morning or afternoon waves have an advantage with calmer conditions.

Collin Morikawa

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 1st, FanDuel: 26th

Coming off a missed cut at the Scottish Open, Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool is projecting Morikawa for single-digit ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel. Last year, in a similar position, Morikawa essentially finished in last place of the players who made the cut at the Scottish Open the week before the British Open, translating into low ownership at the major. In the end, that finish at the Scottish Open ended up being just a blip on the radar, as Morikawa went on to win the British Open at Royal St. George’s by two shots and was an essential piece to winning GPPs that week. In nearly the exact same situation this time around, he is standing out as one of best leverage targets on the board in Stokastic’s Top Golfer’s Tool.

Before the missed weekend at the Scottish Open last week, Morikawa finished fifth at the U.S. Open. During this outing, he only shot over par once at the Country Club, with a 7-over par 77 on Saturday, and if Morikawa was able to avoid this landmine, he would have been in prime position to claim his third major title that Sunday. This finish at the U.S. Open is just one of Morikawa’s seven top-10s in only 15 starts this season and his sixth top-10 in the first 11 major starts of his career. As always, his irons have been brilliant this season, ranking fourth in strokes gained on approach, and Morikawa has improved with his flat stick, ranking 78th in strokes gained putting after ranking 178th in the category a year ago. Morikawa should add another high finish to his already stellar major resume at the Old Course this weekend and is a must-have for large tournaments.

Corey Conners

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 12th, FanDuel: 19th

Conners finished 15th at Royal St. George’s last year and is a strong course fit for the Old Course. This season, he ranks 19th in strokes gained tee to green, 30th in strokes gained on approach, 20th in par-4 performance and 30th in bogey avoidance. Plus, Conners has recently found a nice rhythm on the greens, gaining strokes with his flat stick in two of his last three starts. Currently, Conners sits at a career-best No. 29 in the world golf rankings, thanks to 15 made cuts in 20 starts and 10 top-25s this year. Week in and week out, Conners is one of the safest options available, and with him forecasted for sub-5% ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel in Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool, playing contrarian with the elite ball striker is a no brainer this week.

Robert MacIntyre

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 13th, FanDuel: 8th

Prior to missing the cut at the Scottish Open last week, MacIntyre had an excellent showing at the Irish Open, ranking eight in par-4 efficiency and sixth in strokes gained putting at Mount Juliet Country Club en route to a 13th-place finish. Overall, he has been one of the premier putters on the DP World Tour this season, ranking 24th in strokes gained putting. More importantly, MacIntyre has been a stud at majors throughout his career, specifically at British Opens. In nine starts at the major level, MacIntyre has never missed a weekend. His best finishes came at the past two British Opens, with a tie for eighth at Royal St. Georges last year and a tie for sixth at Royal Portrush in 2019. With essentially no ownership coming his direction on both DraftKings and FanDuel according to Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool, this is an elite time to buy low on a savvy links player like MacIntyre.

Sergio Garcia

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 8th, FanDuel: 3rd

Garcia hasn’t made much noise since joining the LIV Golf league, but this controversial move is expected to result in minimal ownership in his return to St. Andrews this week, according to Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool. Garcia has finished 36th, 5th, 14th and 6th the last four times he played the British Open at St. Andrews. For his career, Garcia is 19-for-24 in made cuts at the British Open, with 14 of those finishes being top-30s. Before taking his talents to LIV Golf, Garcia had made five of seven cuts in the new year, and his expertise at the Old Course should at the minimum get through him the cut this week.
