My name is Chris Randone and If you ever watched The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, then you know getting a rose means everything. It symbolized the guy or girl giving them out has an interest in you. When you get a rose, it means you survive to keep fighting for love.

Well in daily fantasy sports it’s no different. We go through a list of players deciding who will survive and make the cut into our lineups. These players fight to help us win. A true definition of love. I’ve learned being on the show that you never give out roses just for fun, there has to be a meaning behind it. We’ll take that same approach here. Tonight’s rose ceremony I’ll give my Top Stack, Top Pitcher, Surprise Pitcher, & Surprise Stack of this main slate.

Surprise Stack

Philadelphia Phillies, will you accept this rose?

The Phillies have a matchup tonight that brings surprise MLB stack upside. Philadelphia will take on Arizona’s young pitcher Taylor Clarke at home where the Phillies draw a 5.4 run implied total. Clarke’s young career hasn’t panned out well yet as he’s struggled with his secondary pitches which leads to him throwing his fastball more. This could lead to a big opportunity for the Phillies bats if Clarke finds himself relying on the fastball as twelve Phillies currently own a .300 wOBA or higher against fastballs this season. In four games started this year, Clarke has given up 16 hits, 10 runs, and two home runs. The Diamondbacks right hander currently owns a dismal 15.8 percent strikeout rate on the season.

On the other side, The Phillies don’t struggle versus right-handed pitching at home. Philadelphia ranks top-10 in HRs (37), Runs (130), ISO (.192), and draw the second highest walk rate in baseball at 11 percent. The resurgence of Jay Bruce since his trade from Seattle shouldn’t go ignored. Since his trade on June 2nd, Bruce has ripped four home runs, drove in 11 runs, and is batting .381 across 21 at-bats. Rhys Hoskins owns a .299 ISO and .384 wOBA this year at home versus right-handed pitching. Currently, Awesemo’s ownership projections have the Phillies bats being owned in single digit percentile, combine this contrarian ownership with their power and matchup, Philadelphia is a team to look at tonight.

Top Pitcher

Chris Sale, will you accept this rose?

The Boston ace hasn’t only been on fire as of late but his matchup tonight is ideal. Texas owns a ridiculous 31.5 percent strikeout rate against left-handed pitching on the road this season, ranking worst in all of baseball. Chris Sale is a strikeout monster. Sale goes into tonight’s matchup with a 34.9 percent strikeout rate on the season and a 3.05 xFIP. The Rangers rank bottom ten in wRC+ (79), wRAA (-8.2), AVG (.221), and OBP (.288). Sale is projected to be low owned on FanDuel which could be an surprising contrarian play.

Surprise Pitcher

Jason Vargas, will you accept this rose?

I can’t believe I’m doing this but I’m going back to the New York Mets southpaw tonight. Vargas has been doing interesting things we couldn’t explain his last two starts as he’s been magical. Not to mention the 215 pitches he’s thrown in those games while striking out 14 batters. Vargas will face a tough Yankees lineup in a very tough ballpark. However, the Yankees rank second worst in the league with a 28.4 strikeout percentage versus left-handed pitching at home. New York ranks bottom 10 in ISO (.159), wRC (30), wRAA (-7.8), wOBA (.288), and wRC+ (77). The Yankees have struggled while Vargas has been hot. The New York Mets hot pitcher will be owned no where tonight as he’s projected to be less than one percent.
