Welcome to the Roses of the Day, a column highlighting my MLB picks for FanDuel, DraftKings, & Yahoo.
My name is Chris Randone and if you ever watched The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, then you know getting a rose means everything. It symbolized the guy or girl giving them out has an interest in you. When you get a rose, it means you survive to keep fighting for love.
Well in daily fantasy sports it’s no different. We go through a list of MLB picks deciding who will survive and make the cut into our lineups. These players fight to help us win. A true definition of love. I’ve learned being on the show that you never give out roses just for fun – there has to be a meaning behind it. We’ll take that same approach here. For tonight’s rose ceremony I’ll give my Top Stack, Top Pitcher, Surprise Pitcher, & Surprise Stack MLB Picks of this main slate.

Charlie Morton, will you accept this rose?
The Tampa Bay Rays ace gets a dream matchup tonight at home against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are arguably the worst offense in baseball striking out 26.8 percent of the time against righties on the road. The Tigers lack power giving their .150 ISO and .290 wOBA ranking second and third worst in the league respectfully. Charlie Morton will bring is 30.5 percent strikeout rate against this putrid offense and is projected to be the highest own projected pitcher on the slate. Giving the Tigers 2.7 Vegas run implied total, it’s hard to disagree not going with the chalk tonight.
Interesting Pitcher (SP2 Option)
Sandy Alcantara, will you accept this rose?
This is not about Sandy Alcantara’s six strikeout and eight scoreless inning performance he throw earlier in the year at home against the Marlins. This take is about where do we go for a cheap SP2 on DraftKings and rostering the cheap Marlins pitcher could be a viable option. If you’re multi-entering tournaments, pairing Alcantara with a Charlie Morton isn’t a bad option. The Marlins pitcher has the ability to get strikeouts, yes. Does Alcantara limit power? He does.
Alcantara has limited opposing batters to a slate best 1.06 home runs per nine innings. The Marlins righty owns a 10.5 percent home run to fly ball rate. Giving his low price on DraftKings and the other options at his price point, Alcantara could be an interesting option facing a team that possesses strikeout upside in the lineup.
Texas Rangers, will you accept this rose?
The Texas Rangers will be found nowhere in ownership tonight. Jake Odorizzi limiting power could be a strong reason why but this matchup draws good for the Rangers. For one, the weather will be 98 degrees at first pitch which gives a nice bump to bats combined with being in a hitters ballpark. Second, Jake Odorizzi throws his 4 seam fastball a ton. In fact, he throws the 4 seam pitch almost 60 percent of the time. If Odorizzi keeps up that number he could be in trouble tonight against a Rangers team that crushes 4 seam fastballs.
Below is how the Rangers have fared against 4 seam right-handed pitchers on the season
Hunter Pence .468 wOBA
Shin-Soo Choo .451 wOBA
Logan Forsythe .407 wOBA
Danny Santana .373 wOBA
Willie Calhoun .372 wOBA
Hunter Pence .380 ISO
Danny Santana .317 ISO
