DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (8/10)

Main Slate: Orioles vs. RHP Jose Berrios — 4.1 implied runs

The Stokastic Top Stacks Tool sees through the name value of Jose Berrios and is rewarding the Orioles for their solid power up and down the batting order. Berrios has had mercurial results this season, with the highs and lows obscuring a truer, middling outcome. Over his last four starts, he provided a more realistic expectation, with just under a strikeout per inning at the expense of extra-base hits, including 1.98 home runs per nine innings.

Focus on the lefties first, with Cedric Mullins and switch-hitters Anthony Santander and rookie catcher Adley Rutschman at the top of the lineup. Differentiation can be found at the bottom of the order, with Rougned Odor and Ramon Urias coming in at a significant discount and Jorge Mateo bringing speed and being the most synergistic option as part of a wraparound stack. Any of these infield-eligible players is capable of running into one and sending a ball flying out of Camden Yards. In the event the weather risk takes away the Orioles as a viable stacking option, turning to the Braves in their road matchup with scuffling righty Nick Pivetta is a serviceable substitute stack.

Evening Slate: White Sox at LHP Kris Bubic — 4.8 implied runs

Chicago is an above-average team against lefties, and Kris Bubic is a substandard starter. This is a very winnable game for the White Sox, who are within a couple games of both Cleveland and Minnesota, as the American League Central looks to be a high-wire act down the stretch. Bubic pitches to contact at nearly a 78% rate with an 11% walk rate, and he is behind in the count almost 53% of the time.

Jose Abreu, A.J. Pollock, Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez are the core four stalwarts. Yasmani Grandal is always a fun option when looking for a catcher, and Gavin Sheets is an intriguing differentiation play if he makes the lineup against a fellow lefty.

Early Slate: Cubs vs. RHP Josiah Gray — 4.5 implied runs

Clearly the Stokastic Top Batters Tool is waving the white flag when it comes to Josiah Gray. The Washington youngster has shown flashes of strikeout upside, racking up 122 in 106 innings this season. However, his fearlessness when it comes to challenging opposing hitters has also resulted in seven multi-home run games, including four in his last five starts for an even dozen in 25 innings of work.

Lefties have done most of the damage, with the last 335 facing Gray compiling an absurd .312 ISO. Same-handed hitters are also looking elite, with a .229 ISO coming courtesy of the last 403 batters stepping into the box against the 24-year-old.

It will be interesting to see if Willson Contreras is in the lineup for this early-afternoon game, as he usually plays nine out of every 10 games, with his “light” days generally serving as the designated hitter. If he is out of the lineup, the preferred order of players based on their price, projected production, popularity and position eligibility would be Ian Happ, Patrick Wisdom and recent waiver wire acquisition Franmil Reyes (released by Cleveland last week). Rafael Ortega is the punt du jour, with Christopher Morel an option for full stacks.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers

Main Slate Target: RHP Justin Verlander vs. Rangers — 2.6 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,500 | FanDuel $11,300

Tonight will be the third time this season that Justin Verlander has faced the Rangers. In his prior two starts spanning 13 innings, he has tallied 16 strikeouts, a 0.69 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP while leading the Astros to a pair of victories. While this matchup is not going to be a walk in the park, the 39-year-old ace leads the league with a 15-3 record and 1.73 ERA, while his 0.85 WHIP is the second best among qualified starters. Pitching options are thin tonight, and it will be interesting to see how much popularity lands with Verlander in tournaments, considering there is another Coors Field Extravaganza with a gaudy projected run total on the main slate.

Early Slate Target: RHP Brandon Woodruff vs. Rays — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,600 | FanDuel $11,000

Brandon Woodruff is the cream of the crop on the early slate, with his only real competition coming from a trio of lefties in Sean Manaea going against San Francisco and Nester Cortes and the Yankees facing off with Robbie Ray and the Mariners in Seattle.

Tampa is not an easy opponent, and it did add David Peralta at the trade deadline to give them another left-handed power bat. Still this lineup drops off quickly, and Woodruff should be able to make up for any mistakes against the back half of the order.

Additional Opportunities

Jose Berrios is recommended as a pitcher to pick on for DFS; however, he does have a potentially achievable 4.5 over/under strikeout prop. The Stokastic MLB Player Props Tool has him for 4.9 strikeouts and a 60% chance of surpassing the over in this wager. In reverse chronological order, Berrios had 1, 6, 7, 7, 13 and 6 strikeouts in his last half dozen appearances. Though he allows hits and home runs, he is still getting strikeouts. If he can just make it into the fifth inning, there is a strong possibility he will get the five strikeouts needed to win the over on this wager. Even if he also allows five runs and a couple of round-trippers, as long as the Orioles do not send him to the showers early, this is an interesting “hedge” option that can curb the downside if our Baltimore stacks fail in DFS.

If this wager feels a bit risky, you can still navigate things at an advantage with a RISK FREE BET up to $1,000 on BetMGM.

Final MLB DFS Thoughts & MLB Weather Notes

Keep an eye on the weather in Baltimore and Philadelphia. There is likely to be late-evening rain in both cities, but it is too difficult to tell with the early forecast models if there will be substantial precipitation coverage arriving during the game window.
