A phrase uttered by most NBA DFS players — or DFS players in general — is, “Yeah, but what’s his ownership going to be?” We focus on ownership of players quite a bit, and for good reason in some cases. The amount of ownership can determine how “chalk” or “contrarian” a player will be on a given DraftKings and FanDuel slate. So, what’s the right way to go about using ownership to our advantage when building cash and tournament lineups? Alex Baker always has his ownership projections for you to look at and use as an important tool when creating your lineups. Let’s dive into it.
NBA DFS Strategy: DraftKings + FanDuel Ownership
What are Ownership Projections?
Ownership projections are an estimate of how popular a player will be in a given contest. Our ownership projections are geared toward the largest-field tournaments. There are a variety of factors that can impact a player’s projected ownership, such as his projection to the number of other viable options at his position and/or price point to his recent performance. In NBA DFS, late news can affect ownership projections substantially, so be sure to use the most recent update you can.
How can we use Ownership Projections to improve our lineups?
We can use ownership projections to improve our lineups in different ways. One is to look for similarly projected players at the same price point who have a gap in ownership. In tournaments, rostering the lower-owned player in this situation will often give you an advantage. Ownership projections can also be used to ensure that the sum or product of your lineup’s ownership isn’t too high or too low for the contest you are playing.
