Thursday brings a frontloaded slate with the action beginning at 1:10 p.m. ET on DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo. As always, the best way to find top MLB DFS picks is via Stokastic’s industry-leading tools and MLB DFS projections to figure out how to build MLB DFS stacks, identify top pitchers and build strong daily fantasy baseball lineups top to bottom. The Stokastic MLB DFS Top Stacks Tool likes the Seattle Mariners in Minnesota and the Tampa Bay Rays in Kansas City as countermoves against the Coors Field Extravaganza. On the pitching front, Hunter Brown leads the way, with Hayden Birdsong and Janson Junk in pitching-friendly San Francisco as salary savers.

MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers
Main Slate Primary Pitching Target: RHP Hunter Brown (HOU vs. PHI)
Astros vs. Phillies – 3.3 implied runs First Pitch: 2:10 p.m. ET $11,300 at DraftKings $10,200 at FanDuel $51 at Yahoo
The Stokastic MLB DFS Top Pitchers tool has RHP Hunter Brown with the highest median fantasy projection among all hurlers taking the mound on Thursday. Yesterday LHP Colton Gordon blanked the Phillies for five frames, then four relievers each worked scoreless innings to preserve the shutout.
It is a nice dichotomy for Brown after Philadelphia had to look at all left-handed pitching yesterday. The soon-to-be 27-year-old is currently among the three-pitcher breakaway group for the American League Cy Young Award, though he does trail LHPs Tarik Skubal and Garrett Crochet. Brown currently leads the league with a 1.88 ERA and 213 ERA+ while posting career highs across the board.
Philadelphia is only slightly above average on offense with two-time MVP Bryce Harper (wrist) on the shelf, though the slugger is likely to be cleared for action this weekend. The projected lineup for the Phillies has a 19.3% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers since the start of last season, but Kyle Schwarber (28.4%), Brandon Marsh (28.5%) and Otto Kemp (27.3%) all whiff well above league average.
This won’t be a walk in the park for Brown; however, it is important to note that the Phillies have the lowest projected team total on the slate. LHP Cristian Sanchez has tournament consideration against the Astros (3.9 implied run total), though Houston is among the best in the league versus southpaws (130 wRC+). Next up would be RHP Kevin Gausman against Cleveland (23.6% strikeout rate against RHPs this season for the projected lineup), as his sizable discount when compared to Brown is appealing. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers are wrapping up a series in Coors Field with a 7.3 team total.
Main Slate Value Pitching Target: RHP Janson Junk (MIA at SF)
Marlins at Giants – 4.3 implied runs First Pitch: 2:10 p.m. ET $7,500 at DraftKings $5,500 at FanDuel $34 at Yahoo
Getting to the Dodgers in Coors Field against LHP Austin Gomber is going to be a priority, so we will need to find savings on the two-pitcher sites of DraftKings and Yahoo. Fortunately, we have a pair of discounted hurlers in San Francisco as the Giants host the Miami Marlins.
Way back in the 2017 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees chose RHP Janson Junk in the 22nd round after three seasons at Seattle University, which is not exactly a college baseball hotbed. Junk was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Angels, then the Milwaukee Brewers, who designated him for assignment just before the 2024 trade deadline. Houston picked up the erstwhile ace, only to release him after four starts for the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Oakland grabbed him two days later, then immediately designated him for assignment after he allowed six hits and two walks with no outs against Seattle.
After the winter meetings, Miami signed Junk to a minor league contract, calling him up one month ago after the baseball nomad showed savvy and grit in his nine appearances with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
While he has been the Crash Davis of pitchers, Junk at least picked up a lot of experience. This includes 601 innings in the minors, but the majority was at Triple-A, as Junk has just not able to get a break to stick in The Show, getting 67.1 innings, with appearances each of the last five seasons.
The projected lineup for the Giants benefits from having Rafael Devers, but over the last season and change, this collective group has a 23.3% strikeout rate and a semi-adequate.149 ISO against right-handed hurlers. Again, this is about salary relief, and with Junk likely capped around 75 pitches, keep expectations in line.
On the other side of this matchup, RHP Hayden Birdsong is in play for the home team with the Marlins putting out a “haves and have nots” lineup. Jesus Sanchez, Liam Hicks, Agustin Ramirez and Kelly Stowers are competent hitters, though most would be populating the back half of playoff contending lineups. Stowers, Connor Norby and Dane Myers offer up strikeout opportunities, which Birdsong should be able to convert to DFS production.
Overall, Birdsong has seen a wide range of outcomes in his results, leading to him starting this season in the bullpen but ultimately earning a spot in the rotation. He had only nine innings at Triple-A last year before getting called up to The Show, so expect more learning pains from the 23-year-old hurler.
MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks
Main Slate Contrarian Target: Seattle Mariners
Mariners at Twins – 4.2 implied runs First Pitch: 1:10 p.m. ET Opposing Starter: RHP Simeon Woods Richardson DK Top Stack %: 9.1% FD Top Stack %: 8.8%
The Stokastic MLB DFS Top Stacks Tool has the Los Angeles Dodgers as the best stack this afternoon in Coors Field against LHP Austin Gomber though DraftKings has some wicked salaries for Shohei Ohtani ($7,500), Freddie Freeman ($6,200), Teoscar Hernandez ($5,900) Mookie Betts ($5,800) and catcher Will Smith ($6,000) making a full-stack of the best batsmen cost a pretty penny.
This has been a rough season for RHP Simeon Woods Richardson, who has already had one three-game stint at Triple-A back at the end of May. Last year as a 23-year-old, he had 28 starts in The Show, moving up from the minors in late April. He was an adequate back-of-the-rotation arm with decent command, but an overall lack of strikeouts limited his DFS appeal. He also lacks the ability to consistently get ground balls, with a 36.2% rate last year that has slipped to 32.5% this season. That, plus an elevated fly ball rate, has him dancing on the edge of danger whenever runners are on base.
The Mariners have a strong power trio with switch-hitters Cal Raleigh (.373 ISO, 230 plate appearances) and Jorge Polanco (.200 ISO, 204 PAs) doing their best work from the left side of the plate. Luke Raley is back, giving the M’s a more complete lefty option, though hat tip to Rowdy Tellez, who filled in admirably while Raley was out. Settling in a three-man stack is the way to go, with outfielders Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena the next men up for those seeking a full stack.
In his last start, RHP Emerson Hancock saw his ERA increase almost a full run when the Cubs routed him in Chicago, recording four round-trippers and nine total runs against him in just four innings of action. Despite being the sixth overall selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, the 26-year-old was barely a top-10 prospect in the Seattle farm system.
Lefties have been his kryptonite, with a .199 ISO against the last 438 batters he has faced. That has ballooned this season to a .293 ISO against 81 opposite-handed hitters, which bodes well for the Twins. Trevor Larnach (.193 ISO, 234 PAs), Matt Wallner (.240 ISO, 113 PAs) and Kody Clemens (.275 ISO, 114 PAs) are the key three. Switch-hitter Willi Castro does not have a lot of power from the left side of the plate, but he does a good job of making contact and getting on base.
Stokastic’s MLB DFS Single Lineup Simulator is a game-changing tool that transforms lineup construction through powerful, data-driven simulations — essential for serious DFS players. See how the Simulator analyzes this single lineup for today’s MLB DFS slate:
Main Slate Alternate Target: Tampa Bay Rays
Rays at Royals – 5.1 implied runs First Pitch: 2:10 p.m. ET Opposing Starter: RHP Michael Lorenzen DK Top Stack %: 7.1% FD Top Stack %: 7.2%
While RHP Michael Lorenzen isn’t a terrible baseball player, as evidenced by his longevity — debuting in 2015 while spending time as a starting pitcher, a bullpen arm and as an outfielder — he has been pretty mediocre over the last two-plus seasons, having played for four different franchises.
He did make the 2023 All-Star Team when he was with Detroit, and then the next year he tossed a no-hitter for his hometown team during his Philadelphia debut with ample friends and family in the crowd. Prior to getting a one-year, $7 million deal for a second season in Kansas City, he was considering brushing up on his hitting skills to qualify as a two-way player and help whatever team signed him get around the pitcher limit for the 25-man roster.
For DFS purposes, all we need to know is that over his last five starts, spanning 25 innings, he allowed 20 runs while striking out just 19. The five home runs are not horrible, though it does work out to 1.8 per nine innings in this timeframe. Since the start of last year, the 33-year-old has an 18.7% strikeout rate, a 46.8% hard-hit rate and only a 9.5% swinging-strikeout rate.
Look to the righties with power for this same-handed matchup in Yandy Diaz, Junior Caminero and Christopher Morel. Lefties Brandon Lowe and Jonathan Aranda are fine as well given the hitting-friendly weather. Game-time temperatures will be in the low 90s with an 8 to 12 mph breeze out to right-center field.
Today’s Top Sports Betting Picks
If you’re serious about making sharp MLB DFS picks, you already know that long-term success starts with using the right tools. The same approach applies to sports betting — and that’s where Portfolio EV shines.
Take a bet like Brenton Doyle under 0.5 total hits. On the surface, it’s a simple play. But behind the scenes, it’s a +EV bet — meaning it’s mathematically profitable based on the best odds available. And with Portfolio EV, you’re not relying on one-off picks. You’re stacking dozens — even hundreds — of +EV wagers at scale using the Mass Entry tool, turning small edges into long-term profit.
Wondering what is Portfolio EV? Well, it’s the best sports betting tool on the market, and you can get it FREE! Check it out now and start building your bankroll.
Just like one DFS lineup won’t win you a GPP, one smart bet doesn’t build a bankroll. But a consistent process does. This isn’t about chasing hot streaks. It’s about making smart, data-backed decisions every day and letting the math do the heavy lifting.
Doyle has been making good contact in righty-lefty matchups, though his power is down this season. This wager is for him to not get a base knock, so power is not an issue, but it could prove challenging when LHP Clayton Kershaw is on the mound. The former MVP, three-time Cy Young Award Winner and future Hall of Famer has been inducing more ground balls this season (45.1%) while he continues to adapt to life in The Show as a 37-year-old.
