PJ Washington has had a terrific four game stretch with Luka Doncic (wrist) sidelined. In this span, the 26-year-old forward has averaged 37.5 minutes, with 18.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.1 combined blocks and steals.
We have seen the former Kentucky Wildcat score in bunches before, but disappear for long stretches in between. Ideally he continues this production against the Jazz in Utah tonight.
Spencer Dinwiddie has also stepped up in the absence of Doncic, who was the league’s leading scoring last year and vacating 36.3 minutes, 22.6 field goal attempts, 28.1 points and 15.2 combined rebounds and assists in his absence. The last three games have been the strongest for the journeyman, with 32.1 minutes, 16.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.3 combined blocks and steals. He has been coming off the bench, but playing a key role as the offensive distributor, which allows Kyrie Irving to operate off-ball.
Irving is heading towards his 33rd birthday this spring, though the nomadic and mercurial guard has missed only one game this season. The last four games without Doncic have seen him averaging 38.5 minutes and 22.3 field goal attempts, with an anemic 41.6% conversion rate. This has resulted in 25.3 points, six rebounds, six assists and 0.6 combined blocks and steals. That has not been particularly flashy, working out to just over 40 FanDuel and 43 DraftKings fantasy points. Clearly he is in consideration as the player with the second-highest median fantasy point projection on the short-slate, but this is also a leverage opportunity to come in under the field, which projects to have Irving on nearly half of all tournament lineups. Particularly if LaMelo Ball (calf) is unable to give it a go against Atlanta on FanDuel, which is including all five games.
Jordan Clarkson (third game, left foot) and Kyle Filipowski (fourth game, ankle) are out for Utah, though John Collins (knee), Lauri Markkanen (personal/knee) and Collin Sexton (ring finger, left hand) are expected to be available. Collins and Markkanen each missed Wednesday’s game, though it is expected that both will be back with the first five. There is always a chance that Collins could go back to the bench, though he had started seven consecutive games prior to Wednesday, including two alongside Kessler.
Kessler functions well with Markkanen on the court, not losing too much from his fantasy production. Collins is a different story as that brings another competitive rebounder and frontcourt scorer into the mix. In 92 minutes together this season, Collins is averaging 1.27 fantasy points per minute, while Kessler is around 0.96. When they are apart, Collins does not see much difference, though Kessler jumps up to 1.21 fantasy points per minute.

Yes, definitely play Giannis Antetokounmpo, particularly since he has the best median fantasy point projection on the short Saturday docket. The two-time NBA MVP has received ample coverage in this article series over the last six weeks, so let’s take a look at Damian Lillard instead.
On Wednesday, Lillard powered the Bucks to a 106-103 victory in Miami, without Antetokounmpo.
Coach Glenn Rivers has been working with Antetokounmpo and his balky knees, though it was a pleasant surprise to see the team pick up the slack and extend the five-game winning streak. This certainly seemed like it was going to be a “schedule” loss, so the victory was that much sweeter, while also getting Milwaukee back to .500, with seven of the nine wins coming in the last eight games.
Lillard put up 37 points and 12 assists without Giannis, giving him a top-three performance for the seasons. Since missing a trio of tilts with a concussion, Lillard has averaged 36.1 minutes, 26.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 9.8 assists and 0.8 combined blocks and steals in the subsequent five forays. Milwaukee is coming into this game as 15.5 point home favorites, so there could be some late-game rest for the dynamic duo, if the victory is being put on ice.
Gary Trent Jr. is the only other Milwaukee player to project for double-digit popularity on DraftKings and FanDuel, being assigned a $4,100 salary on each site. It appeared that this would be a great fit for the NBA vagabond, though he has tallied more than 12 points twice this season, on a team desperately starved for another offensive contributor.
Kyle Kuzma (ribs) is out once again as the Wizards continue to unabashedly tank. In a crazy twist, the next worst team is Philadelphia (3-14), though the team is actually trying to make the playoffs. Utah and New Orleans are one game “better” with Toronto completing this flailing five with a 5-15 record.
Jordan Poole appears to be both disinterested and bad at basketball these days. He missed a pair of games with a hip issue, before coming back to play on Wednesday, missing six of his seven shots. Yes, there is a chance for a Poole Party tonight, but damn he is hard to consider even remotely trustworthy. In 15 games, he has four with at least 40 fantasy points and one with 50, with three sub-20 efforts.
There is no questioning the effort of rookie Alex Sarr, though his results are all over the board. Speaking of boards, he has double-digits twice this season, though his rebounding and block rates are solid from a per minute perspective. He is a tournament wild card, while Jonas Valanciunas could see some additional work, if veteran Brook Lopez can induce some early foul trouble for Sarr.
Malcolm Brogdon gets a “Remember Me?!” game against the team that drafted him, but the well-travelled Virginia Cavalier has suffered a litany of injuries, sapping him of the talent than earned him the Rookie of the Year Award back in the 2016-2017 season. He is still a fantasy point per minute player, but the team is hesitant to let him go much over 24 minutes, even as a starter.
Be careful with rookie Kyshawn George, who has averaged barely half a fantasy point per minute, with 26 minutes of run over his last half dozen games. Yes, I wrote off rookie Tidjane Salaun, in his last start and got the blade — but I feel confident in giving the same low grade to George tonight. Rookie Carlton Carrington III is a better option, though he too has a lot to learn, having been a one-and-done player at Pitt.
In summary, Pool, Sarr, Valanciunas and Brogdon are the best bets tonight, though the savvy gamer will be under the field on each.
Today’s Top Sports Betting Pick
Continuing yesterday’s lesson, once more we are going to focus on how the math works. Fortunately, we can let the Portfolio EV tools take care of the heavy lifting for you in the background.
Kyrie Irving has a +115 on the under for his 6.5 assists prop, which is an interesting target. Looking at the screen shot of Portfolio EV, we can see this wager is likely to come to fruition 49% of the time, which means we need it at “plus” money.
The twist today is seeing that ESPNBet has the best expected ROI%, but DraftKings is not far behind, with a “safer” wager.
Well, that is where leveraging Portfolio EV to run the numbers, makes spotting favorable bets a breeze. With this tool, inefficient odds become easy to identify. By keeping accounts across multiple sportsbooks, you can act quickly to lock in the best available odds.
This approach effectively pits the sportsbooks against each other, revealing that ESPNBet odds of +115 odds and the DraftKings odds of -142, while increasing the threshold to under 7.5 assists, are each better than what the other major operators are offering.
Odds are always changing, so when you see a favorable line, acting fast is crucial. That’s where Portfolio EV shines — it pinpoints the best odds available around the clock, ensuring you never miss an opportunity.
Stokastic’s Advanced NBA Statistical Projections have Irving projected for 35.6 minutes and 5.88 assists. The “True Odds” of +115 and a 49% win rate on ESPNBet show that there is a 5.1% expected ROI. DraftKings has a lower 3.0% expected ROI, which is a function of the -142 line creating a lower payout, but Irving needing to get to eight assists is one more than what will torpedo this wager on ESPNBet.
Luka Doncic (wrist) has missed the last four games and five of the last six, though he is getting close to a return and while that may not occur tonight, there is a good chance it will be tomorrow. Over the last 10 games, half with and half without Doncic, Irving has averaged six assists. The crazy part is that he has seven once, five once and exactly six the other eight times. Do not let that pattern sway you, but when looking at overarching variable outcomes, Irving has seven or more assists in just three of his 19 (16%) games.
Since the start of last season, when Doncic is off the court, Irving has seen his assist rate increase dramatically to 32.7%. However, the composition of the team has changed and in 301 minutes without Doncic beside him, Irving has a 24.5% assist rate. Tim Hardaway Jr., Derrick Jones Jr., and Josh Green helped pick up the scoring slack (albeit not very effectively), when Doncic missed time. That trio is elsewhere this season and Klay Thompson, who was brought in to be the third-option on offense, well he is out.
This has Irving carrying more of the scoring, with Spencer Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes and Jaden Hardy helping with the offensive facilitation, since none is a particularly efficient scorer. Yes, this wager is likely to go down to the wire, particularly with Dallas only six point home favorites against Utah, but the hope is that seventh assist on ESPNBet continues to remain elusive for Irving.
