DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Spotlight Plays of the Day for 4/17

We’ll break today’s spotlights up into 3 tiers today with pricing once again being very soft, making it easy to fit in a lot of the top guys. One guy will be in a league of his own below, and then we’ll give you the mid-tiers and value that we like afterward. You can check out the Awesemo Player Rankings to see where each player ranks for tonight. Awesemo will start with his take, then I (Tommienation1) will follow up with some additional analysis.

Top-Tier

Alex Ovechkin ($8,100 DK/$8,500 FD)

“You’re not going to find someone with a higher floor and ceiling combination than Ovechkin tonight, so he’s a tough fade in all formats.”

Awesemo is spot on here. There’s no other play outside of Ovechkin (“A” points grade) that has provided this kind of shot volume consistently, as he has 25 shot attempts with 9 Scoring Chances in his first two games. Playing with a solid playmaker like Evgeny Kuznetsov and setting up in his office on the power-play, Ovechkin will likely get a mention in this article every time he’s on the slate. Pricing is very soft again tonight, so he’s a guy I’m looking to put in my lineup even at increased ownership.

Mid-Tier

Zach Parise ($5,400 DK/$6,200 FD)

“Parise’s team showed life in their last game, and with their total up to 2.8, he’s a guy we like as an offensive catalyst.”

Zach Parise (“B” points grade) has quietly scored in all three games this series, and he’ll have a good chance to do that again tonight. Both myself and Awesemo love the Staal line as a stack tonight, but this version of Parise’s line was great at even-strength this season as well, posting 32 Scoring Chances For per 60 minutes and 16.8 High-Danger Chances For per 60 minutes. Parise leads the Wild these playoffs in Scoring Chances and High-Danger Chances. He’ll be on the top power-play unit in a game that, if it’s anything like the first 3 games, should be chippy, meaning more opportunities on the man-advantage.

Jeff Carter ($5,700 DK/$6,200 FD)

“Carter’s team has the 3rd-highest total on the night in a must-win game, so he should see big minutes again after 20 minutes last game.”

The Kings will rely heavily on their top-6 tonight for offensive production down 3-0 to Vegas in the series. They have yet to bust out, but Carter (“A” points grade) and his linemates were great in their last game on offense, as Carter himself posted 9 shot attempts and 4 Scoring Chances. Expect to see Carter put in favorable spots at even-strength with a lot of offensive zone faceoffs tonight as the Kings try to spark something on Offense tonight. Toffoli or Pearson both make solid additions to carter in tournaments if you want to mini-stack.

Value

Jacob Trouba ($4,200 DK/$4,700 FD)

“Trouba should get increased minutes tonight at even-strength and the power-play with the loss of Tyler Myers”

Trouba played 20 minutes last game and may be asked to carry a heavier load on the power-play without Myers in the lineup. Lost in a 6-2 throttling by the Wild, Trouba attempted 8 shots as the Jets had trouble getting close to the net at even-strength. With the same matchups as last game, Trouba should be blasting away from the point at even-strength and will likely get 2nd unit PP time.
