DraftKings and FanDuel NHL Spotlight Plays of the Day for 5/1

Another 2-game slate where the matchups in both games tonight should stay mostly the same even as the series will head to Pittsburgh and Winnipeg. Below you’ll find one player from each team that we’re spotlighting in addition to the Stacks of the Day article. Awesemo will start with the reasons why he likes each player, then I (Tommienation1) will follow up.

Top-Tier

Alex Ovechkin ($7,700 DK/$8,800 FD)

“The pricing on DraftKings makes it fairly easy to get in Ovechkin and a bunch of other studs, so taking his floor and immense upside is smart in all formats.”

Ovechkin (“A” points grade) has attempted 21 shots and created 12 Scoring Chances in the first 2 games of this series and he should be able to fire away once again tonight. With a slate this short, he needs to be mentioned in this article or the stacks article almost every night because of the rate he is shooting at. He’s one of the few guys that I think is priced correctly on DraftKings, but I’ll be trying to get him in my lineup once again tonight.

Roman Josi ($5,500 DK/$5,900 FD)

“Josi is averaging over 28 minutes over the first 2 games of the series. He’s one of the top defensive options on the slate tonight.”

We get a road discount on Josi (“A” points grade) tonight on DK at only $5,500, but he should be playing with NSH1 for a lot of the time, and I expect them to win that matchup against WPG1. Josi’s only downside is that he doesn’t correlate on the power-play with NSH1 as he’s on the 2nd unit, but the amount of ice time he sees with them at even-strength should make up for that. With 15 shot attempts and 9 Scoring Chances in the first two games, Josi is a great play once again tonight.

Value

Nikolaj Ehlers ($4,700 DK/$5,700 FD)

“Ehlers is the cheapest we’ve seen on DK in a long time but his team has the 2nd-highest total on the night and he still gets power-play time on the 2nd unit.”

This is a weird price for Ehlers (“B” value) on DK on home ice where he should avoid the top-2 Predators’ lines at even-strength. In the first 2 games of the series, Ehlers has a modest 10 shot attempts and one assist, but last-change for the Jets on home ice should free up Ehlers and Laine. He’s on the 2nd power-play for the Jets and plays on a very talented line, so there’s a lot to like about Ehlers at this price.

Justin Schultz ($4,000 DK/$4,600 FD)

“Schultz has played 22 and 27 minutes so far this series including top power-play time with one of the best units in the NHL.”

This is a pretty easy value play for me to recommend as the minutes at even-strength have been there and he’s been getting top power-play time even though some sites don’t have him listed there. He’s cheaper than Kris Letang, is getting more power-play time, and will probably be lower-owned in tournaments for the 3rd straight slate. I’ll take the savings and Schultz (“A” DK value) tonight as he correlates better the top-6 skaters for the Penguins.
