The Spotlight Plays of the Day will feature a couple of Awesemo’s top plays of the day, followed by additional analysis from myself, Jake Hari, aka Tommienation1 on DraftKings and FanDuel.
I love slates like this — 10 games, lots of studs, lots of moving parts, and thus, lots of value. Not only is it a great slate, but DraftKings is rolling out some big GPPs tonight, so there’s no better time than tonight to hit the nuts and build that bankroll for MLB season.
Evander Kane ($6,600 DK/$6,700 FD)
“Kane comes up as an “A” on the points grade despite not having the greatest matchup in the world. His high shot-volume and position on Joe Pavelski’s wing makes him one of the better one-offs on the board.”
In his 10 games as a San Jose Shark, Kane is second on the team in shot attempts (65), first in individual Scoring Chances For (41), and tied for first in individual High-Danger Chances For (25). It’s safe to say he’s fitting in pretty nicely in San Jose, and while Awesemo is right about the so-so matchup against the Golden Knights, he’s shooting at one of the highest rates in the league, with an over 20 individual Corsi For per 60 minutes (iCF/60) in March. Throw in some top power-play minutes for the underpriced sniper and he becomes a great play in all formats tonight at these prices.
Connor McDavid ($7,800 DK/ $8,800 FD)
“One of the best players in the NHL against one of the worst defenses in the NHL? Seems like a good fit for a solid performance for McDavid despite his underwhelming linemates.”
As another “A” points grader, McDavid’s even-strength matchup against (likely) the Jean-Gabriel Pageau/Bobby Ryan combo is one that can be taken advantage of. Pageau and Ryan together have allowed 31.6 Scoring Chances Against per 60 minutes (SCA/60) and 14.1 High-Danger Chances Against per 60 minutes (HDCA/60) in over 147 minutes of ice time. It may be a lost season for the Oilers, but this is one of the better matchups for their transcendent superstar, and he’s worth the price on both sites.
Nolan Patrick ($4,100 DK/ $4,500 FD)
“The Flyers’ second line center provides some salary relief at home against the Rangers’ depth lines, who have been less-than-stellar defensively.”
Less-than-stellar defensively is actually a pretty positive way of putting it. The Rangers’ second line has been downright atrocious at even-strength, allowing over 35 SCA/60 and 21.4 HDCA/60 in almost 70 minutes of ice time. The Flyers are at home, meaning they’ll get to dictate line matching here, so expect to see Patrick and the second line getting a healthy dose of the Rangers’ second line. For $4,500 (“A” FD value), you’ve got yourself an excellent play.
Anthony Beauvillier ($3,700 DK/$3,900 FD)
“Beauvillier is underpriced for the matchup against the Lightning, which is good at both even-strength and the power-play. A cheap winger playing alongside one of the better playmaking centers in the NHL should peak your interest tonight.”
Underpriced is right. For a sub-$4K price tag on both sites, you get a winger that loves to shoot in a plus even-strength matchup (detailed here in our stacks article) and second unit power-play time. Beauvillier has flourished when skating with Matt Barzal, and the Vegas-total of 6.5 indicates there should be chances to go around for both teams tonight.
Brent Seabrook ($3,800 DK/$4,700 FD)
“Seabrook should see a bump in minutes should Duncan Keith not be able to play tonight, and against the Canucks, who are one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL, he provides some decent value as a cheap d-man.”
Seabroook is not the most exciting defenseman to click on as he is well over the hill in terms of his playing career, but he comes up as an “A” value on both sites. The Canucks struggle mightily on the penalty-kill (77.7%) and they have been short-handed the 5th-most times in the NHL on the year. If Keith can’t go tonight, Seabrook is a near lock for 22+ minutes and top power-play time.
