My name is Chris Randone and If you ever watched The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, then you know getting a rose means everything. It symbolized the guy or girl giving them out likes you. Getting a rose means you survive to keep fighting for love. Well in daily fantasy sports it’s no different. We go through a list of players deciding who will survive and make the cut into our lineups. These players fight to help us win. A true definition of love. I’ve learned being on the show that you never give out roses just for fun, there has to be a meaning behind it. We’ll take that same approach here. Tonight’s rose ceremony I’ll be given my Top Stack, Top Pitcher, Surprise Play, and Surprise Stack of this main slate.
Top Stack:
Astros, will you accept this rose?
Houston owns the highest run implied total (5.8) going into tonight’s slate. Astros rank top 2 in HR (29), wOBA (.367), and wRC+ (140) vs RHP at home. They’ll face Jesse Chavez who is no stranger to struggling against right-handed hitters this season. In 47 ABs, right handed batters are hitting (.404) and have crushed 5 HRs against Chavez. Astros will be projected to have 8 right-handers in the lineup. Hitters 1 through 5 is filled with power for Houston. Robinson Chirinos and Carloss Correa like to face RHP at home with their .438 ISO and .393 ISO which ranks tops in the league.
Top Pitcher:
Jacob deGrom , will you accept this rose?
The number one pitcher on the main slate will be difficult to ignore tonight. Jacob deGrom will be the highest owned pitcher which is not surprising. He draws a huge favorable matchup at home against the Marlins. Miami is the worst hitting team in baseball and on the road against RHP. Miami’s .081 ISO and 53 wRC+ ranks dead last. Miami is striking out 26.1% of the time against RHP on the road. Earlier this year deGrom fanned 14 Marlins over 7 Innings and I expect no different tonight from the ace.
Surprise Play:
Hunter Pence, will you accept this rose?
Last year, Hunter Pence hit 4 HRs while batting .226 across 235 AB. In 2019, Pence has already surpassed his HR total from 2018 (6 HRS) and has 23 hits in 70 AB (.329). It’s early, but this could be the #ComebackSZN for Pence. Tonight he’ll face Gerrit Cole who is projected to be one of the highest owned pitchers on the main slate. Cole has been interesting this year. The strikeouts have been there but he’s struggled keeping runs off the board. In two matchups against Texas this year, Cole has giving up 11 ERs in 10.1 inning pitched. On the road vs RHP this year, Pence has a .429 ISO and .499 wOBA which ranks a top the league. Hunter will be severely low owned (0.1% projected) as will the rest of Rangers. Utilizing Pence as a one off or in a Rangers stack could provide some surprising upside tonight on this 8 game MLB main slate.
Surprise Stack:
Dodgers, will you accept this rose?
Facing one of the best pitchers in baseball (Max Scherzer), Dodgers could be an interesting stack play that has upside. Both Pederson (.571) & Cody Bellinger (.491) rank in the top 10 ISO against RHP at home. Dodgers as a team are ranked #1 in ISO (.239) and wRC+ (142). Los Angeles also is the second lowest strikeout team (17.4%) in MLB against RHP at home. Scherzer is incredible but as Cole, Scherzer’s SO have been there yet keeping runs off the board on the road have not. In three games on the road the year, Scherzer has giving up 11 ERs and batters are hitting (.325) against him. When stacking in tournaments, having surprise plays like this sometimes pay off. Dodgers will be low owned and provide enough power to make this a high potential surprise play.
