MLB DFS Picks Friday 5/27: Spotlight Pitchers & Top Stacks Today

Friday, May 27, brings a loaded 13-game main slate beginning at 7:05 p.m. ET. There are plenty of intriguing pitching options, as well as a few tomato cans to target. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks today for pitchers and stacks for DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (5/27)

Top MLB DFS Stack of the Day: Baltimore Orioles at RHP Garrett Whitlock — 4.4 implied runs

There are plenty of teams to stack with Atlanta, Boston, Colorado, Minnesota and the Los Angeles Dodgers all being at the top of the list. Baltimore is an intriguing secondary stack in its matchup against youngster Garrett Whitlock, who has produced disparate results in each of the first two months of the season. Last year, Whitlock was a lockdown reliver, who had a 1.96 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 73.1 innings while allowing just six home runs. This year, he has slowly been stretched out as a starter and he is now able to throw around 80 pitches per outing. In the first month, the Red Sox had him pitching every four days in multi-inning efforts to build up his endurance. In these six outings, he had a stellar 0.54 ERA in 16.2 frames, ceding only one round-tripper. In four starts this month, he has averaged 78 pitches per appearance and while the strikeouts have been there with 20 in 16 innings, he has allowed nearly 1.6 baserunners per inning which has resulted in an unsightly 6.75 ERA.

The top of the Baltimore lineup is where we should focus with Cedric Mullins, Austin Hays and Anthony Santander being the outfield options and Trey Mancini and Ryan Mountcastle the first basemen who are in play. Looking for a duo or trio of the group would be best since they all occupy premium power positions and while that will provide plenty of differentiation, it also locks us out of some of the best options on the primary stacks.

Late Slate: San Diego Padres vs. LHP Jose Quintana — 4.3 implied runs

Absolutely stack the Dodgers on the main and late slates against veteran lefty Madison Bumgarner in Arizona tonight where the Chase Field roof is scheduled to be open. Now, when looking for something a little different on the late slate, the Padres fit the bill. So far this season, 33-year-old Jose Quintana is off to the best start of his career. This is mostly due to luck, as his fastball is at a career-low 90.7 mph, and he has been relying on his change-up nearly three times as often as any other season in his 11 MLB campaigns. Regression is coming, and we will want to be there when it arrives.

Manny Machado is carrying the Padres in the absence of Fernando Tatis Jr. and he is the prime option in all formats tonight. Wil Myers and Luke Voit are solid power options in the back half of the order and infielder Ha-seong Kim has some pop in his bat, as well as speed on the basepath, having swiped two bags in his last six games. He is a terrific discount dandy on FanDuel ($2,500) and DraftKings ($3,600) as part of a San Diego stack or as a one-off option.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top MLB DFS Target: RHP Justin Verlander at Seattle Mariners — 2.9 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,500 | FanDuel $10,800

Justin Verlander gets a nice matchup against the Mariners, who have seen their offense fall back to a production level more in line with their limited talent. It is going to be cooler in Seattle with game-time temperatures in the upper-50s, which is a bonus for pitchers. The M’s projected lineup has a 25.4% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers dating back to last season with mediocre power. Verlander may give up a run or two as he is likely to challenge the hitters tonight, but 8-10 strikeouts are also in play.

Secondary MLB DFS Target: RHP Shane Bieber at Detroit Tigers  — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,000 | FanDuel $8,600

There are some weather concerns here tonight, but it looks like this game should be able to play. There are also some concerns with Shane Bieber, who has seen his fastball velocity averaging just over 90 mph, which is a far cry from the 94 mph average during his 2020 Cy Young campaign. If his opponent was any team other than the Tigers, we would want to look elsewhere. However, he just struck out 10 Detroit batsmen in his last start, and it is not like the team has improved since Sunday. If you have any worries about Bieber, we have plenty of other pitching options. Also, keep in mind this major decrease in velocity is likely attributed to the shoulder injury that knocked him out last June.

Additional Opportunities:

Jon Gray should be on our radar in the MLB player props market. Tonight, he faces Oakland with an over/under on his strikeout prop of 4.5 while the Awesemo player projections have him with a solid 6.0 for this matchup. That gives him a 73% probability of surpassing the over. Though Gray has more than four strikeouts only once this season, he has had at least four in all but one start. The projected lineup for the Athletics has a 25% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers which is well above league average.

Other Pitching Options:

  1. Sean Manaea at Pittsburgh Pirates
  2. Alek Manoah (late slate)
  3. Austin Gomber at Washington Nationals
  4. Jon Gray at Oakland Athletics (SP2)
  5. Bailey Ober vs. Kansas City (SP2)
  6. Kyle Bradish at Boston Red Sox (discounted tournament SP2)
  7. Jeffrey Springs vs New York Yankees (discounted tournament SP2)

One-Off Hitters:

  1. Javier Baez vs. LH

Final MLB DFS Thoughts &  MLB Weather Notes

There is some rain in the Mid-Atlantic area with Boston, New York and Washington all having varying degrees of precipitation risk led by the Nationals vs. Rockies game. In the Midwest, Cincinnati and Detroit are worth keeping an eye on as well.
