MLB Spotlight Pitchers for DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo, June 28 (FREE)

Josh Engleman

Josh Engleman breaks down his favorite MLB DFS Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel MLB DFS, including Mike Clevinger and more.

MLB DFS:  Friday, June 28th brings us 14 games (with the NYY and BOS getting a day off as they travel to England for their two game weekend series in London Stadium) with  some warm weather and gaudy implied run totals, particularly for the Dodgers in Coors Field which should make the tournament action fun on Yahoo, DraftKings and FanDuel. Before you lock in your fantasy baseball lineups, make sure to check out Awesemo’s MLB rankings and projections. I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

I love big slates. We’ve got 14 games going tonight and it doesn’t appear we’ll have any weather issues to deal with. I truly can’t wait until lock.

FanDuel MLB DFS Picks

Even though the price tag is massive, Jacob deGrom is my favorite pitching option of the night. I understand that the Braves aren’t a great matchup, but even factoring that in, there’s not another pitcher going with a higher ceiling. I currently have deGrom projected for nine strikeouts, which is a full strikeout ahead of Mike Clevinger and three strikeouts more than any other pitcher. He’s just that good. There are plenty of cheap stacks that you can use with deGrom if you need the additional money.

If I’m paying down from deGrom, my next guy up is the aforementioned Clevinger. I’m hoping he knocked off most of the rust in his first start back. When fully healthy, Clevinger is a clear $10K pitcher against the Orioles. This is an incredible discount. It wouldn’t shock me if Clevinger is my most exposed pitcher due to the savings. Hyun-Jin Ryu will have depressed ownership due to starting in Coors, but he’s certainly worth the risk at $8500. With Trevor Story out of the lineup, Ryu really only has one scary right handed bat to deal with. I like my odds. Finally, if I need to get really different, I think Yonny Chirinos deserves a close look at just $6300. He’s a better pitcher than the price tag implies.

DraftKings MLB DFS Picks

On DraftKings, the top end stays the same. I don’t really expect to get much Lance Lynn or Cole Hamels because of Clevinger. Mike Soroka looks like an interesting option to pair with Clevinger. I’m not super worried about the Mets bats, and it’s possible Soroka goes overlooked. Ryu is priced down because of Coors, so he’s clearly another option that works well in combination with Clevinger. Since the Tigers stink and strikeout a ton, Anibal Sanchez is a perfectly acceptable option at $7400. You also have the ability to spend down to a bunch of guys in the $5K-$6K range. I’ll certainly be getting 5-10% the Elieser Hernandez, Shaun Anderson, Eric Lauer and Michael Wacha section. Honestly, I think Jhoulys Chacin is in play at $5000. It’s that crazy of a slate.

Yahoo MLB DFS Picks

Yahoo went crazy. Clevinger is the most expensive pitcher at $56. he’s $5 more expensive than deGrom, who has the same price as Hamels and Berrios. This should be obvious: smash deGrom. Soroka at $41 appears to be the best value in the middle tier. After Soroka, I’m looking to drop into the low $30s. Danny Duffy at $32 is mildly interesting, as is Hernandez, Wacha and Anderson. I would likely cycle through those four guys with either deGrom or Clevinger at the top.
