NBA DFS Building Blocks Today: Sunday, January 29

Core Play of the Day — Ja Morant: Indiana Pacers-Memphis Grizzlies

  • Stokastic’s Preliminary Point Projections: DraftKings: 56.95 | FanDuel: 54.29
  • Stokastic’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: DraftKings: 64.50% | FanDuel: 70.50%
  • DFS Salary: DraftKings: $10,200 | FanDuel: $10,000

Projected right behind Giannis Antetokounmpo as the highest scoring player on the slate, Memphis point guard Ja Morant is a clear core building block in all formats today. Matched up with a fast-paced Indiana team that gives up a ton of fantasy points to opposing guards, Morant is expected to be far and away the highest owned player on the slate on both DraftKings and FanDuel. Coming into tonight’s game averaging 48.8 DraftKings points per game, Morant has been especially good recently, averaging 58.5 DraftKings points over the past two games. With Memphis in the midst of a five-game losing streak, expect the Grizzlies absolute best effort tonight, with Morant undoubtedly leading the way. A true ‘fade at your own risk’ type of play in both cash games and GPP’s, Morant is too cheap across both sites making him almost impossible to get away from on this small three-game slate.

Los Angeles Clippers-Cleveland Cavaliers

In what sets up as the potential game of the night for viewing purposes, there’s also a lot to like from a DFS perspective on both the Cavs and the Clippers. Starting with L.A., the Clippers are finally starting to play good ball, winning their past five games. After beating Atlanta last night, it will be interesting to see who sits on the second half of the back-to-back. We’ve read this book plenty of times before with the Clippers, but if Kawhi Leonard sits, everyone else becomes more viable, with Paul George emerging as a core building block in all formats. Conversely, if George sits, Leonard would become the building block piece with the rest of the starters also looking much more appealing. If both they both sit, Terance Mann, Reggie Jackson and the rest of the active Clippers would become strong value plays, despite the tough matchup in Cleveland.

The story is similar in Cleveland where Donovan Mitchell remains questionable with a groin injury. If Mitchell sits, Darius Garland would become an elite play while Caris LeVert and Evan Mobley would also emerge as two of the better plays on the entire slate. Secondary pieces like Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade instantly become more viable if Mitchell sits, while Jarrett Allen doesn’t see a big difference either way. If Mitchell is in, Garland and Mobley would surely still be in play, but not nearly the priorities they would be if he’s out.
