PGA DFS Optimizer Picks for The Masters: Has Everyone Forgotten About Dustin Johnson?

The best week of the golf season has arrived. For the first major championship this year, the PGA Tour heads to Augusta National Golf Club (par 72, 7,545 yards, bentgrass greens) this week for the 2023 Masters. Augusta National has been the lone home of The Masters since the event’s inception in 1934. Edging out Rory McIlroy by three shots, Scottie Scheffler donned the green jacket last season, finishing at -10. This field features 88 golfers, and there will be a top 50 and ties cut following the first two rounds.

Below are some of the top PGA DFS picks for the Masters, utilizing Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool to find the best leverage plays for GPPs.

PGA DFS Picks & Leverage: The Masters

Augusta National is a challenging venue that features sloped fairways and lightning-fast greens. To come out victorious here, players first and foremost need to be dialed in with irons. Scheffler ranked fifth in greens found during his Masters win last season, making him the fourth consecutive Masters winner to rank top 7 in the metric. Avoiding the large numbers on the scorecard and being efficient on the par 5’s are also musts to contend at Augusta National. For three years running, the golfer to win The Masters has finished the tournament top 5 both in bogeys avoided and par-5 efficiency.

Leverage scores are a product of comparing a player’s ownership versus their salary-weighted odds to finish in the top 6 of the tournament.

Jordan Spieth

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 65th, FanDuel: 33rd

Hovering around 12% expected ownership for both DraftKings and FanDuel in Stokastic’s projections, Spieth isn’t getting the attention he deserves this week. He has been on the brink of winning recently, with three top-6 finishes in his last five starts. Spieth has gained strokes on approach at five consecutive tournaments and should contend for a win at Augusta National given his form as a ball striker.

Throughout his career, Spieth has been absolutely brilliant at The Masters, making 8 of 9 cuts and recording five top-5 finishes, including a win in 2016.

Dustin Johnson

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 10th, FanDuel: 20th

After dominating in his first season on the LIV Golf tour, leading the league in individual championship points, Johnson has already produced two top-15 finishes in only three starts this season. He has made 10 of 12 cuts at Augusta for his career, with seven of those being 13th place or better. Most notably, he won the 2020 Masters and finished runner-up in 2019.

Not only is Stokastic projecting Johnson for single-digit ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel this week, he is the cheapest he has ever been for a Masters tournament on both sites, making him an incredible option for GPPs.

Shane Lowry

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 43rd, FanDuel: 11th

Lowry impressed at The Masters last season, finishing third, marking his third straight top-25 finish at the major. He now returns to Augusta National as the maker of 6 of 7 cuts this season, with four top-25 finishes. Lowry’s success can mostly be credited to some impressive ball striking, with him ranking top 25 in both strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained on approach for the season. Lowry also ranks 16th in par-5 efficiency over his last 24 rounds, setting him up perfectly for Augusta National.

Lowry has tallied seven top-25 finishes in his last 10 starts at the major level and is an elite sleeper for GPPs this week, with Stokastic forecasting him for single-digit ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel.

Bubba Watson

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 5th, FanDuel: 2nd

Like Johnson, Watson’s departure to the LIV Golf league has resulted in him being overlooked in terms of pricing and ownership. Watson’s salaries on both DraftKings and FanDuel this week are new career lows for him at The Masters, and Stokastic is projecting him to come with essentially no ownership on either site.

While Watson’s play in LIV Golf hasn’t been great this season, with an average finish of 34th in three starts, a trip to Augusta National is exactly what the doctor ordered. Watson’s signature left-handed fade off the tee has been a match made in heaven for Augusta, as he has won twice and only missed one cut in 14 appearances here. Watson should easily outproduce his low price tags here and is an outstanding, cheap flier for GPPs.
