The 150th running of the British Open (or the Open Championship, for you purists) runs this week, and it should prove to be an exciting event. The field has 49 of the top 50 players in the OWGR attending, with lots of names coming over from the newly formed LIV Golf Tour. There’s more than just LIV’s recent uprising to be intrigued by this week, though. Tiger Woods is in the field and will be making his first start since the PGA Championship. There are also past champions at St. Andrews like Louis Oosthuizen and Zach Johnson in the field, along with recent major winners Matthew Fitzpatrick and Justin Thomas.

Let’s dive into the best British Open DFS golf picks this week and find some of the best PGA DFS value plays for DraftKings and FanDuel lineups.

2022 British Open DFS Golf Picks & Projections

While the Old Course at St. Andrews may be one of the most revered golfing venues in the world, it’s also likely the easiest venue on the Open’s current rotation of courses. St. Andrews plays as a par 72 but measures in at just over 7,300 yards and hasn’t really been modernized much over the last decade or so — with the exception of refreshing some of the bunkers and moving the tee box on the road hole back. The Old Course has just two par 5’s and two par 3’s but carries an exceptional number of short par 4’s, many of which will be drivable this week by the field. The seven or so par 4’s that will set up at 400 yards or less should make scrambling from 30 yards and out a vital statistic and also should bring a lot of the field into play. The venue hasn’t changed much since 2015, and that season saw a three-man playoff, with the eventual winner in Zach Johnson going off at 80-1 in the pre-event betting markets.

With such a wide-open event on tap, we are looking to find the top projections and top daily fantasy golf picks this week for DraftKings and FanDuel contests with the help of the Stokastic projections and model. Below we’ll target some of the best DFS golf picks for DraftKings and FanDuel fantasy golf contests.

The Old Course at St. Andrews Club Stats and Info

  • Par 72, 7,305 yards; features two par 5’s, two par 3’s and 14 par 4’s, making it a non-traditional par 72.
  • There will be 7 to 9 par 4’s on the course every day that play under 400 yards, many of which will be drivable off the tee.
  • Strong wedge play and around-the-green play will be crucial; look for scrambling outside of 30 yards and short proximity to play a larger role; as of now, poor weather isn’t expected for the week, so the winning score could even push for 20 under par or better.

British Open 2022 DFS Golf Picks & Fantasy Golf Projections

Rory McIlroy

Total Points Projection: 80.8 | Top 6 percentage: 25.96%

While Rory McIlroy is the most expensive player on the board on DraftKings ($11,100), there’s a pretty clear gap between him and the rest of the top players in the Stokastic projections this week. McIlroy is the only golfer in the Stokastic model that projects with a total points score of over 80.0 for the week and also has a top-six projection that is off the charts at an over 26% hit rate.

The nice thing about using McIlroy this week is that, while most will be on to the fact he has the highest upside possible of anyone in this field, his price is going to keep his ownership levels at least somewhat palatable. On DraftKings, he’s trending towards 20% ownership, which isn’t terrible considering his last three starts include a fifth place at the U.S. Open and a win in Canada. McIlroy famously had to miss St. Andrews back in 2015 (he would have been the favorite that season too), so he has the “revenge narrative” on his side this week. He should be a player to go overweight on here given how strongly his projections are on Stokastic.

Max Homa

Total Points Projection: 66.2 | Top 6 percentage: 10.82%

If paying up all the way for McIlroy, use the Stokastic model to help find some values lower down the field who are projecting well. Currently, Max Homa has the highest points projection of anyone under $8,000 on Stokastic this week, with a total points projection over 65.0 points. Homa ranks ahead of many players in the low-$9,000 to high-$8,000 range, which says how much the model likes him this week.

Homa may be a popular pick this week because his salary is so cheap on both major sites, but that shouldn’t dissuade from eating a little chalk and potentially even being overweight on him either. Homa has had a great lead-in, recording a win (Wells Fargo), a top-five (Memorial) and a tie for 13th at a major (PGA Championship), all over his last six PGA Tour starts. The fact he came over last week and finished top 10 in the links in Scotland is a great sign he’s ready and focused for this week as well. While his recent form will make him popular, the Stokastic model also suggests it will be tough to find a player with his upside anywhere else in this range, making him the preferred value target to pair with elite anchors.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 25.5% | FanDuel: 32.2%

The Stats:

  • Has gained strokes off the tee and on approach in eight of his last 10 starts.
  • Ranks fifth in strokes gained putting and fourth in DraftKings points over the last 24 rounds.

Low-Owned PGA DFS GPP Flier

Adam Scott

Total Points Projection: 60.2 | Top 6 percentage: 6.79%

Adam Scott doesn’t have the flashy projections that Homa does — whom he’s very close to in price this week — but he still projects strongly on Stokastic and will likely have half to one-third the ownership that Homa does. Scott outperformed Homa at the last major (he finished 14th while Homa was 47th) and showcased a great all-around game there that saw him gain multiple strokes putting and around the greens.

The massive fairways at St. Andrews should help Scott’s biggest weakness (an erratic driver), and he has tons of Open Championship experience to fall back on. Scott has been hyper-focused on the majors of late, and it would not be shocking to see him perform well and get in the mix at what has been his most consistent major. Veterans ruled the day in 2015 at St. Andrew’s, and Scott could continue that trend in 2022.

Projected PGA DFS Ownership: DraftKings: 7.5% | FanDuel 3.4%

Top 3 Under 5% in DraftKings Fantasy Golf This Week

This section will target players that should end up under or close to 5% ownership in larger DraftKings Golf GPPs. These picks are boom/bust PGA DFS players with an almost 100% focus on the upside.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($7,300)

Bezuidenhout is coming into this year’s Open Championship with some great form. He followed up a second place at the John Deere Classic with a solid 14th place at the Scottish Open last week, and he ranks as one of the best scramblers from 30 yards and out on the PGA Tour. The fact he’s trending at well under 10% ownership makes him a great GPP target at his low $7,000 price tag.

Emiliano Grillo ($6,700)

Grillo is obviously a massive boom-or-bust target, but this has arguably been his best major, as he’s recorded two top-20 finishes at this tournament in his career now, including a 12th-place finish from last year at St. George’s. He’s been flashing solid form of late as well, showing good sharpness around the greens and with the putter. He sets up as a high-end GPP play who should benefit from an easier course and softer conditions.

Brandon Wu ($6,100)

There will likely be a few DFS players who roster Wu this week after a sixth-place finish at the Scottish Open, but it likely won’t turn into a huge crowd. Wu was a great college player who popped up last week with a top-10 finish to grab a last-minute spot in this week’s major. He hit all 18 greens in Round 3 last week and certainly looks like he has the upside this week to warrant as a solid GPP punt at the bare-min price.
