Week 5 of the NFL season is here, and the survivor pools continue to shrink. With each passing week, more and more people are eliminated and the payoff for surviving and advancing becomes that much higher. On the flip side, there are fewer opportunities to select teams, and that makes it’s a difficult task later in the season. With the mountain of injuries, a lot is changing during the week. Let’s dive into who makes sense this week for survivor.
NFL Survivor Picks and Recap | Week 5
Week 4 NFL Survivor Pool Recap
Lions (-5.5 vs. Seahawks)
This line didn’t close at -5.5, as the Lions were hit with a string of injuries to their offense. The good news is that probably scared some people off Detroit, and they ended up losing in a 48-45 shootout. The bad news is that they still were a favorite going into the game and made sense for people playing the long game. Detroit was this article’s selection last week, leading to elimination from several pools. That’s the risk/reward with these below-average teams.
Eagles (-6.5 vs. Jaguars)
There were minor scares early in the game, with Jacksonville taking a quick lead in Philadelphia. Ultimately, the weather and the Eagles proved too much for Trevor Lawrence, who was forced into several key turnovers as the game went on. Philadelphia is the lone unbeaten team in the league and one to consider in survivor on the majority of weeks.
Packers (-10.5 vs. Patriots)
The supposed free square of the week was the Green Bay Packers at home against the Patriots. New England was down to backup quarterbacks, and going into Lambeau field is a recipe for disaster. It didn’t get the memo, forcing a pick-six of Aaron Rodgers and taking the game into overtime. Green Bay won in the end, and for as bad as the showing was, there is no extra credit for looking good in survivor. The Packers advanced, and anyone who took them moved onto Week 5.
Week 5 NFL Survivor Pool Picks
Bills (-14.5 vs. Steelers)
Just to get Buffalo out of the way, it is the biggest favorite there has been all season. The Bills are at home against a Steelers team that just lost to the Jets and is destined for the bottom of the division. Buffalo is the safest pick maybe of the year, but it is also the most valuable team to save. Balance this against how many people remain in pools, with fewer entries tilting more toward using Buffalo.
Vikings (-7 vs. Bears)
Targeting divisional games is something to avoid if possible, but it is also unwise to ignore potential spots in survivor. The Vikings are coming back from a win in London and now draw a home matchup with the lowly Bears. This Chicago offense cannot protect Justin Fields, and it’s easy to see why they are +275 on the money to win this game. Minnesota should be able to do enough on both sides of the ball here, and being back at home is another boost. The Vikings are not really a team to save for later, and in some ways it is better to get rid of them in a spot like this.
Week 5 NFL Survivor Pick: Jaguars
Jaguars (-7.5 vs. Texans)
Teams Used: Ravens, Broncos, Bengals, Lions
Again, a divisional game isn’t ideal, but getting the Texans on the road cannot be ignored. It’s clear the Jaguars are improved this season, but planning for a deep run in survivor involved getting rid of some of these middling teams. This is probably the biggest favorite the Jaguars will be all season, so it may be now or never to target them. They’ve played one home game on the season and looked incredible against the Colts, while the Texans are destined for the worst record in the NFL. The Bills are the safe choice, but the Jaguars are the best choice this week for NFL survivor.
