Our own Steve “dacoltz” Buzzard took home another $100,000 win this week on FanDuel, and the man himself says this is about as good a start to an MLB DFS season as he has found in his career. So how does he do it? How are Stokastic’s Sims getting guys like Steve and Tom Kennedy to the top of the leaderboard on a regular basis? FanDuel MLB DFS Lineup Study: Winning Lineups With Help From MLB Sims
Steve’s winning ways are not exactly a new development — just Google “Steve Buzzard Stokastic win” and you’ll find a ton of examples of him raking in the cash.
But what you should take from that is, when he says this is one of his hottest starts he has ever had, that is really saying something. The guy has hot starts just about every season — so this run is a real humdinger.
Stokastic is always looking to improve our Sims in terms of the data, the user experience, the mechanics, what have you. Steve is at the forefront of that (you can catch him in Discord for his Office Hours every Thursday to see some more of our development process), and he uses the Stokastic’s Sims just as often as we’re always recommending you do. When he wins, the Sims are a direct contributor to those $100,000 cashes. Tuesday was no different.
This lineup had some boom/bust results for Steve, at least in terms of his stack choice. The good thing about the Cardinals, though, was they were fairly low-owned, and the guys Steve went with in the Cardinals stack projected well in Pre-Contest Sims. Paul Goldschmidt was actually the highest-ROI player in those simulations, but Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras and Brendan Donovan were not far behind. The Sims nailed it there, as all three ended up with strongly positive ROIs in the real contest.
Anthony Volpe ended up as the No. 2 shortstop on the slate and did so at low ownership, and Brandon Nimmo and Donovan were both top-8 outfielders — each also had single-digit ownership. That’s where Steve’s Sims run really killed it for him, getting 25-plus fantasy points from three lower-owned home run hitters.
All in all, Tuesday was a great day for the Stokastic Sims — and therefore Steve — as players who simulated with high ROIs ended up paying off big for him, and often as contrarian plays. That’s often the key to success in MLB DFS, finding those stacks with upside and low ownership so you can grab the top pitcher like Yamamoto who can get you 40-plus points.
