After playing the Valspar Championship last week, the PGA Tour heads to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship. This event is usually on the schedule for most of the top-tier players, which gives viewers a nice appetizer before the PGA Championship. One and Done has a lot of big names to choose from given the strong field.
What is a One and Done pool?
A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that you cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week you have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become your points. You cannot use the same player twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning is in line for a big payoff. Your pool will pay several spots, depending on its size, similar to a GPP structure that we all know from PGA DFS.
Valspar Championship Recap
Louis Oosthuizen
Coming off a near win at the Zurich, going to Oosthuizen made a lot of sense last week. He had a runner-up finish at Valspar a few years back, and his game was trending in the right direction. After an ugly Thursday, he rallied to make the cut and gradually climbed the leaderboard to finish a respectable eighth. The $201,000 payday was a solid cash, and considering where he was headed after 18 holes, this feels like a small victory.
Paul Casey
As back-to-back Valspar champion, Casey obviously got some interest from the public in One and Done. He was unable to accomplish the extremely difficult three-peat and was not a factor come the weekend. He did breeze through the cut, so he cashed a check, but the $65,000 wasn’t great. The opportunity cost of using him isn’t enormous, so overall this won’t have a major impact.
Sungjae Im
Through 36 holes this felt like a potential seven-figure payday. Im started out fantastically with a 68 on Thursday and followed it up with a 67 on Friday to find himself in perfect position heading into the weekend. Unfortunately, the ball striking escaped him, and he shot 74 on Saturday to slip out of contention. An average round of 71 on Sunday further solidified the middling result, and the 29th only netted $40,000. Given that he was poised for a potential win after 36 holes, this felt like an underachieving week.

Wells Fargo Championship One and Done Picks
Tony Finau
Another year and another string of top finishes without a win for Finau. He is constantly peppering the top of the board, but he still struggles to close the deal. It has not been all his fault, as a few times he played phenomenally Sunday only to be caught by an even better round. Still, for One and Done, he is a valuable asset because he cashes a ton of big checks even without finding the winner’s circle.
Finau has not played a ton lately, as he finished 10th at the Masters and then played with Cameron Champ in the team event at the Zurich. His form isn’t as red hot as earlier in the year, but his game is still heading in the right direction. His abilities off the tee will be important, and he has plenty of experience at this event having played four of the last five years. He should once again find himself in contention this week.
Will Zalatoris
Zalatoris certainly always has had some upside, but it is stunning how quickly and consistently he has put things together. He has shown his ball striking to be world class, and the runner-up finish at the Masters means he can handle any and field strengths. He now comes to another course where he has no course history, but given what Quail Hollow offers, this should be a nice fit.
In terms of opportunity cost, Zalatoris is a luxury since most did not plan to use him this season. He has gained at least three strokes on the approach in five straight events, which is ball striking not often seen from anyone on tour. This course demands that type of precision, and Zalatoris’ game should be able to stand up to this test. Like most, his putter is the wild card, but given the way he has been playing, Zalatoris has to be considered in One and Done.
Jon Rahm
Rahm comes up in this article all the time, and that is because he is so incredibly consistent. He hasn’t missed a cut all year and has seven top-10 finishes in his 11 starts. That is huge in One and Done, as even when he doesn’t have the A-game he finds a way to add some money to the yearly total. The opportunity cost of where to play Rahm is huge, as everyone will use him at some point.
Rahm only played this course once, in 2017, but it was the PGA Championship instead of the Wells Fargo. He finished 58th, but that was a completely different setup than what is expected here. He should have much better results this week, and there are not many red flags in his game. The wins are going to return since he is too good to have a year-long stretch without finding one (last win was August 2020), and this is another spot worth targeting.
Wells Fargo Championship PGA One and Done Pick: Tony Finau
Deeper and deeper into the One and Done season, it becomes even more crucial to evaluate the standings. It is important to pick quality golfers who have a chance for a big finish, but it is also vital to gauge the pool. If down the leaderboard, it may be time to employ some volatile golfers to make up some ground. If towards the top, keep going for cut makers as much as possible.
Finau feel like a nice middle ground between those two options. He may not be as reliable as Rahm, but he is better at finding the weekend than other boom/bust options. His ball striking is always solid and he can attack off the tee, which others like Rory McIlroy have shown to be a way to get around Quail Hollow. The lack of recent form could keep Finau’s popularity down, and he checks a ton of boxes in One and Done this week.
