Top Stack: Boston Red Sox vs. RHP Alex Faedo — 5.6 implied runs

The Stokastic MLB Top Stacks Tool LOVES the Red Sox tonight, having the best Top Stack % on the slate.

The Stokastic Top Stacks Tool is all over Boston in this matchup against rookie Alex Faedo. Tonight will be the ninth career start for the 26-year-old, who is the 16th-rated prospect in the Detroit organization. Faedo projects as a back-of-the-rotation starter with pedestrian strikeout numbers and a tendency to allow power. His last two starts have been particularly rough, with the White Sox and Pirates combining for eight runs and three home runs in eight frames.

Rafael Devers is one of the best plays on the slate and he has big-time extra-base hit upside in this matchup. Fellow lefties Alex Verdugo and Franchy Cordero are in play, as well as Jarren Duran if the youngster is installed at the top of the lineup. Naturally, J.D. Martinez, Trevor Story and Xander Bogaerts are also fine choices for a full-stack or as one-off options.

Evening Slate: Toronto Blue Jays at RHP Lance Lynn — 4.9 implied runs

Lance Lynn will be making his second appearance of the season after undergoing surgery in April for a torn tendon near his knee. The pitch count looks to be there, as he threw 88 last Monday in Detroit, but he was clearly rusty and it was no surprise that his velocity was down. The Tigers are the worst team in the league against right-handed pitching, yet they still managed 10 hits, with one home run and three earned runs among the 22 who got to take their swings against Lynn.

Toronto tends to perform better against southpaws, but it has a lineup loaded with dangerous hitters. Target the usual suspects in the top six, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, Teoscar Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel and Bo Bichette being the preferred order of preference when considering projected production, popularity and potential points-per-dollar performance. Check out the Stokastic Top Batters Tool to see where this group ranks at their respective positions.

Late Slate: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. LHP Kris Bubic — 4.5 implied runs

Kris Bubic is playing with fire anytime he takes the mound. Across his last 679 batters faced, he has a below-league-average 20.2% strikeout rate with a downright horrible 11.2% walk rate. His 8.6% launch angle and 39.5% hard-hit rate led to a lot of line drives, but it does not take much for those to turn into home runs against skilled hitters.

The Halos lineup is comically top heavy, particularly now with Anthony Rendon out for the remainder of the year. Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and leadoff man Taylor Ward are the trio to target. Kurt Suzuki is also a fine selection at catcher if he sees his name on the lineup card.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top Target: RHP Gerrit Cole at Tampa Bay Rays — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,500 | FanDuel $10,300
DraftKings MLB DFS picks today FanDuel fantasy baseball lineup optimizer projections rankings 2022

While Gerrit Cole does not have the top projection among pitchers on the slate tonight, he might be the SP1 you want to build around tonight.

Today, there are several aces on the mound; however, most are in neutral to unfavorable matchups. In turn, the good matchups are going to some of the shakier pitching options. This should make for some interesting decision points and wide-open tournament leaderboards.

Over his last five starts, Gerrit Cole has had a pair of rough outings and a trio of games where he allowed one combined run. Back on June 6, he just did not have his stuff, getting knocked around by the Twins in Minnesota for his worst start in several seasons. Though multi-home run games are not uncommon for Cole, who challenges hitters and racks up strikeouts in the process, Minnesota got to him for five home runs in 2.2 innings.

Tonight, he will be making his third start over the last three weeks against the Rays, and while he has limited them to just one run, with 17 strikeouts across a dozen innings, this matchup is, by no means, a walk in the park. Tampa Bay has been average from a run creation perspective, but there are strikeouts to be had with a 24.8% rate against right-handed hurlers this season. Coming in under the field on Cole seems like a savvy strategy, though it does not have to be a dramatic stand.

Secondary Target: RHP Corbin Burnes vs. St. Louis Cardinals — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,900 | FanDuel $10,400

Over his last three starts, Corbin Burnes has been less than efficient, recording just 14 innings while averaging 101.7 pitches per appearance. On the positive side, these were against three good offenses in the Mets, Phillies and Padres, and though he allowed eight earned runs, he also had 22 strikeouts. Though the Cardinals are not an easy matchup, Burnes is still the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner and ranks third with 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings, with both his 2.52 ERA and 0.95 WHIP just inside the top 10 among all qualified starters. St. Louis struck out 10 times against right-hander Nick Pivetta on Sunday and Burnes is a far more talented pitcher.

Late Slate Target: RHP Yu Darvish vs. Arizona Diamondbacks — 3.1 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,100 | FanDuel $10,200

Pop Quiz: How old is Yu Darvish? This is his 17th season as a professional baseball player, and while he began his MLB career in 2012, he had already played for seven seasons in Japan for the Nippon Ham Fighters. The five-time All-Star will be 36 years old in August and is no longer at the peak of his powers, but he can still take care of business more often than not. Though his strikeout rate is down to just 20.5%, the Diamondbacks have a 23.9% rate, which is the seventh highest in the league. This year across a dozen starts, Darvish is averaging 95.6 pitches per outing, allowing only six home runs with a 3.35 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. From a point-per-dollar perspective, Darvish is an excellent SP2 tonight on DraftKings in all formats.

Additional Opportunities

Max Fried has a tricky matchup against the Giants, and while he is a secondary option in the DFS world, we can still look at him in the MLB player props market. Tonight, he has a 5.5 over/under for his strikeout prop and the Stokastic MLB Projections have him for 6.5, giving him a 65% probability of reaching the over. While he could give up a few runs, which would dampen his DFS production, he should be live to record half a dozen strikeouts in most scenarios. The projected San Francisco lineup has a 24.7% strikeout rate against southpaws over the last two seasons, and Fried has a 23.7% combined strikeout rate in the same timeframe. This season, the 28-year-old has at least six strikeouts in 7 of 13 starts and has five in three others.
