The Jock MKT Starter Kit: NBA DFS Picks | Jan. 28
How to Play at Jock MKT
To begin, enter the NBA Daily Market when the Initial Public Offering (IPO) phase is under way. Leading up until the start of the first game, bid up on players you are interested in acquiring on the open market. Is there a player who you consider a favorite to finish at the top of the rankings? Invest as much or as little as you want in their fantasy performance, with shares beginning at $1 ranging all the way up to $25. See potential injury news that could open up opportunity for another player to acquire fantasy points? Make speculative bids for shares of the back-up, hoping for that news to break after the IPO phase is complete.
The next part of the game occurs during live trading. Unlike in regular NBA DFS where your plays are locked in, you can buy and sell shares of players while the games are happening based on their production and where you could see them finishing amongst the field. Track as current points, projected points, and live price for each player is updated in real time, allowing you to track the action and invest in an instant to account for news. Trading can be done all the way up until the final buzzer of the night’s final game.
And the end of the games, each player share is paid out based on their final rankings of fantasy points amongst the field. If the shares you own are worth more than what you paid, you win money. It’s as simple as that! For more information, go to jockmkt.com.
Strategy Session — The IPO Phase Strategy
In true NBA DFS fashion, I started writing up Anthony Davis as my main target, and he promptly got ruled out. Which, of course, came after I was targeting some of these Heat players before Jimmy Butler was upgraded to questionable. That’s the crazy nature of this season so far, but what some view as market volatility we should view as an opportunity.
Let’s first address a few of these affected Lakers pieces, specifically LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma. James has to be considered the frontrunner to finish first in fantasy points tonight should he be good to go (he’s still listed as questionable). In 248 minutes with Davis off the court this season, LeBron has seen a 4% usage increase to 37%. I’ve tried to avoid overpaying for the top projected player on multiple occasions this season, but this might be an exception if the price is right.
Kuzma is the player I assume will see this largest ramp up of value in the IPO phase leading up to lock. Despite only a 1.4% increase in his usage over the course of 233 minutes with Davis off the court this season (20.2%), the extra minutes upside should more than make up for that. I’ll be curious to see what the projected bid on him will need to be when trading opens at 5:30 p.m. EST, but there’s obviously an upside there I’ll want shares of.
As far as the Heat go, I’m going to wait to put any bids on players until after there’s some clarity on the multiple Heat questionable tags. That’s the first game that will starts at 7:30 p.m. EST lock — or should I say closing bell — so we will certainly have that news ahead of time.
My Targets for Tonight
- Marc Gasol — Keep your fingers crossed that Gasol will be somewhat overlooked in the aftermath of Davis being ruled out. While it’s a small sample size, Gasol has seen a 16.7 DraftKings points per 36 minutes increase in his 57 minutes with Davis off the floor. If he’s sitting in that mid-30s during the IPO phase, I think he makes a good buy-low option. I’m worried about the fact the 13-year veteran played 24 minutes last night, but so long as he’s in the starting lineup, I won’t be too concerned. He’s far from a sexy pick, but even a small jump in placement from the bottom end of options could lead to a nice ROI.
- Anfernee Simons — I want to get exposure to this Blazers – Rockets track meet, but some of the top-end options look like they’ll be appropriately priced. Simons, currently sitting down in the 40s of projected fantasy points, could make for an excellent option. He certainly benefited last game out from the Rodney Hood late scratch, but he performed well enough that I could certainly see minutes into the mid-20s as a plausible outcome. I’m hunting for upside in this bottom range, and seeing back-to-back outings of 22-plus Jock MKT fantasy points certainly shows that Simons is capable of that.
