NHL DFS Picks, Top Stacks for DraftKings

Stack 1 – Nashville Predators

(C) Thomas Novak: $3,500

(W) Filip Forsberg: $6,400

(D) Roman Josi: $8,600

The first stack to target on Wednesday’s slate features the Nashville Predators, who travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. Goaltender Petr Mrazek is the confirmed starter for Chicago on Wednesday night and should be a great fade candidate.

Through 11 starts this season, Mrazek is 2-7-1 with a .872 save percentage (SV%) and 4.24 goals against average (GAA). Based on his metrics, positive regression is unlikely for the veteran netminder.

If he qualified, Mrazek would rank second-to-last among starting goaltenders in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5-on-5. The defense in front of the veteran netminder has been just as disastrous this season.

At 5-on-5, the Hawks rank fourth-to-last in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). This combination of poor defensive play plus a goaltender whose confidence is shattered leads to a plethora of goals for opposing teams.

A stack consisting of Thomas Novak, Filip Forsberg, and Roman Josi is a great build for this slate. Centerman Thomas Novak just got called up from Milwaukee on Monday, and immediately served alongside Filip Forsberg and Mikael Granlund.

Novak immediately impressed, producing an assist, two shots on goal (SOG), and one blocked shot (BS) for 9.3 fantasy points. Through 9:27 of ice time, the Forsberg-Novak-Granlund line generated an outstanding 66% xGoals%.

Forsberg is typically a great guy to pick in fantasy, posting 25 points this season through 30 games. What makes him especially valuable is his willingness to shoot the puck, ranking second on the team in shots behind star defenseman Roman Josi.

Following a slow start to the season, Josi has gone nuclear over the past 15 teams. Over that stretch, Josi is averaging a whopping 20.1 fantasy points per game (FPPG). It’s worth noting that Stokastic’s ownership projections tool does have Josi (21.0%) as the highest rostered player on the main slate.

Josi, Novak, and Forsberg all skated together on the first power play last game. Entering this contest, the Hawks rank 19th in the league in penalty minutes and 27th in penalty kill percentage (PK%).

Stack 2 – Florida Panthers

(C) Eetu Luostarinen: $3,600

(W) Carter Verhaeghe: $5,700

(D) Gustav Forsling: $5,300

The second stack to target on Wednesday’s slate features the Florida Panthers, who host the New Jersey Devils. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood is the projected starter for New Jersey on Wednesday night and could be a good fade candidate.

Through eight appearances between the pipes this season, Blackwood possesses a mere .879 SV%. Based on his metrics, positive regression is unlikely for the Devils’ netminder.

If he qualified, Blackwood would rank fifth-to-last among starting goaltenders in GSAx/60 at 5-on-5. In his last start against Florida, he surrendered four goals on 27 shots for a troubling .852 SV%.

A stack consisting of Eetu Luostarinen, Carter Verhaeghe, and Gustav Forsling is a great build for this slate. With the injury to star forward Aleksander Barkov, the Panthers reshuffled their lines on Monday and created the Verhaeghe-Luostarinen-Reinhart line.

Through 20 minutes played together this season, that line boasts an exceptional 69% xGoals%. Both Verhaeghe and Luostarinen have had a successful week, combining for two goals and four assists over the last three games. Luostarinen’s ownership is projected to be on the average side at 6.8%.

These two forwards also skate alongside defenseman Gustav Forsling on the second power play unit. Since Thanksgiving, Forsling has consistently found himself on the stat sheet.

Over his last 14 games, Forsling is averaging 11.5 FPPG.

Stack 3 – New Jersey Devils

(C) Dawson Mercer: $4,400

(W) Erik Haula: $3,300

The last stack to target on Wednesday’s slate features the New Jersey Devils. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is the confirmed starter for Florida on Wednesday night and could be a good fade candidate.

Through 19 appearances between the pipes this season, Bobrovsky is 7-9-1 with a .894 SV% and 3.26 goals against average (GAA). Based on his metrics, positive regression is unlikely for the veteran netminder.

Among starting goaltenders, Bobrovsky ranks 22nd in GSAx/60 at 5-on-5. A mini-stack consisting of Dawson Mercer and Erik Haula is a great build for this slate.

Haula serves as the centerman between Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes, which has been a sensational line this season. Through 127 of ice time, the Bratt-Haula-Hughes line has produced a tremendous 67% xGoals%.

While Mercer skates with the bottom six, he still finds ways to contribute on the score sheet. Over his last 14 games, Mercer is averaging 8.7 FPPG. Hughes is projected to have 13.34 fantasy points tonight, well worth spending up for if DFS managers want to double down on New Jersey.

Mercer and Haula also skate together on the second power play unit, which should get plenty of looks in this contest considering that the Panthers rank 24th in the league in penalty minutes and 20th in PK%.

Goaltender

Brian Elliott (TBL at DET): $8,100

Since the Tampa Bay Lightning enter this contest on the second half of a back-to-back, backup goaltender Brian Elliott is slated to get the start for the Bolts. Serving as the backup for Andrei Vasilevskiy, Elliott has been more than capable in his role this season.

Entering this contest, Elliott has won seven straight games. Over that stretch, he has posted a .905 SV% and 2.82 GAA.

This successful stretch of goaltending should continue against the Red Wings, a team Elliott has dominated over the past couple of seasons. Through his last seven starts against Detroit, he is 7-0 with a .945 SV% and 1.41 GAA.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings should have plenty of their own troubles offensively. The absence of forwards Tyler Bertuzzi (hand) and Jakub Vrana (personal) has hurt this team’s offensive production immensely.

At 5-on-5, Detroit ranks third-to-last in the league in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60). With Elliott’s track record against this team, Wednesday night should not be too difficult for the backup netminder.
