How to Use Stokastic’s MLB DFS Lineup Generator

Using the Top Batters and Top Stacks Tool in Coordination with Lineup Generator

A good first step before diving right into the Lineup Generator is heading over to the Top Stacks Tool to see what stack you want to target for any given day. In this example below, the Padres are pulling the top Stack Score as well as good leverage in a hitter-friendly matchup, so we know when we get to the Lineup Generator we are going to want a Padres stack.

But we also want to find some one-off batters, which is why we next need to go to the Top Batters Tool. Here we find that Bobby Witt Jr. has easily the best chance of being the top-scoring shortstop on the slate, plus a top-5 chance of being the best value at the position. His ownership is higher at 12.5%, but he is still not the chalk of the position. Therefore, we are going to be looking to Witt as well in the Lineup Generator.

Now It’s Time to Get our Settings in Order in the Lineup Generator

The first things you need to decide in Lineup Generator are the slate you are playing and the stack type. For our example, we are using the DraftKings Main Slate, and since we are simply going for the best stack based on our observations from the tools, we are taking All Stack Types.

Then you will be prompted with the type of lineups you want generated: Chalky, balanced, contrarian or no preference. If you are playing a cash game, you may want to lean chalky. In large-field contests, it may be better to go more contrarian. Again, we’re going with All Lineups to see what the tool is going to give me.

Finally, you will be prompted with players you want to lock in. You can skip this step if you want (just click Skip); however, we are going to lock in Witt as one of our hitters. Once you click him, the tool will immediately start to generate your lineup and display it on screen.

Now, remember that we said we want a Padres stack based on information from the Top Stacks Tool. Well, in our first run of the Lineup Generator, we got a 4-4 stack of Red Sox and Royals, which is not what we’re looking for.

But this tool will show salary, projected fantasy points, total ownership, and where it falls on the percentile scale of optimal projections and ownership level. We don’t really like this first lineup, so we are going to click Discard.

This part of the process could take some time since we know the Padres are going to be the most valuable stack a lot of the time on this specific slate, so we will keep clicking Discard until we get a Padres-centric stack from the Lineup Generator.

Remember, we can only lock one player, so we can’t tell the generator to always grab Padres. Obviously, a Padres stack will have at most five players, whereas the real Padres lineup has nine. We can’t lock in all nine Padres; in this instance, we have to trust the Lineup Generator to find the right Padres.

In this case, we discard about 15 lineups before getting a Padres stack. If you are having trouble finding the stack you are hoping for, it’s possible that said stack simply doesn’t work well with the hitter you locked. In which case, you may have to find a different hitter to lock or stack to target.

But we found a Padres stack that worked with our hitter target in Witt, so next you click the green Save button. That essentially bookmarks the lineup and sets it to the side while the Lineup Generator continues to give you new lineups.

We got another Padres stack with our next lineup, so we saved that one as well. Ultimately, it’s this simple where you click through countless lineups, save the ones you like and discard the ones you don’t.

If you like a lineup for the most part but want to swap out an unappealing player, you can click the arrows on the right side of the player boxes, and that will allow you to select someone else in that slot. This is a way to essentially lock a player in without the generator automatically locking someone like we did with Witt.

Once you have a portfolio of lineups, click View Saved Lineups at the bottom of the screen. You can save up to 20. On this page you can view the lineups you saved, make adjustments you see fit, view exposures of certain players and stacks in your lineups, or even decide to adjust your whole strategy and clear out everything.

Once you are happy with your lineup portfolio, simply click Export to CSV and you will get a file with all your player names that you can then upload straight to DraftKings or FanDuel. It’s really that simple — click, click, click until you like what you see. That is the Stokastic Lineup Generator guarantee.
