PGA DFS players got a surprise earlier in the season when Tiger Woods shot a 69 in the first round of the Genesis Invitational. He would go on to make the cut and finish tied for 45th at the event. That wasn’t enough to win a large field GPP, but it certainly came out of nowhere and made some DFS players, and certainly PGA fans, pretty happy.
Woods was priced at $7,400 on DraftKings for the Genesis Invitational, in large part due to his name value that was boosting his odds on PGA betting markets. DraftKings’ PGA pricing model leans heavily on Vegas odds. That said, Tiger Woods’ price looked pretty inefficient. Some DFS sites even had him as the lowest projected golfer in the field.
There’s no doubt that Woods is a longshot and won’t be a huge part of anyone’s portfolio. But after that surprise performance by Woods in February, how does he look now for PGA DFS? And is there any merit to rostering the all-time great for anything more than “sweat equity?”
Woods is at a similar price for the Masters at $7,300 on DraftKings and $9,100 on FanDuel. Stokastic’s PGA DFS projections currently have Woods down for 45 fantasy points and 38.2 on both sites, respectively. His points-per-dollar projection have Woods surprisingly ranking toward the middle of the pack from a value perspective.
That may be viable relative to his expected ownership of 6.6% on DraftKings and 3.3% on FanDuel. Nevertheless, Woods’ name value could boost those numbers above their projection, especially in the large field, lower buy-in GPPs for Masters DFS.
PGA DFS players should keep that in mind when building their lineups. Woods may be a longshot, but there may be enough there to get a share or two of the 47-year old in your lineups.
