2023 Mexico Open DFS Picks & Core Plays: Long-Hitting Will Gordon Right Where He Needs to Be

After last week’s team structure, it’s refreshing to return to a normal stroke play event at the Mexico Open. Although this is one of the weakest fields of the year, there is still potential for profit. One player that will be on everyone’s mind is Jon Rahm, but figuring out what to do with him this week is purely a strategic decision everyone will have to make on their own. As the best player in the field with the highest fantasy point projection, he won’t be included in these core plays. This course favors a bomb-and-gouge approach, playing nearly 7,500 yards with wide fairways off the tee, making it a long hitter’s dream. Let’s take a look at some core plays that reflect just that.

Top DFS Picks for 2023 Mexico Open

Will Gordon — $7,900

Will Gordon has been one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, averaging 319 yards over the last calendar year. He has made 12 of his last 15 cuts since returning to the PGA Tour in September after a short stint on the Korn Ferry Tour. Gordon also ranks inside the top 30 in both strokes gained on approach and birdie-or-better percentage in this field. With a significant advantage given to the longer hitters due to this week’s course layout, he sets up very nicely to attack Vidanta.

Luke List — $7,800

Luke List has been a mainstay at the top of the PGA Tour driving distance statistics year in and year out. Through his world-class distance, he ranks second in this field in strokes gained off the tee over the last 50 rounds. His 55% driving accuracy is usually a cause for concern on tighter courses, but there’s nothing to worry about in that department this week, as Vidanta features some of the widest fairways these guys will play on all year. He also ranks in the top 25 in strokes gained on approach in this field over the last 50 rounds, which is deadly when combined with elite distance off the tee. List’s putter will likely keep him from winning this event given its birdie-fest nature, but at $7,800, he presents great value in a weak field.

Joseph Bramlett — $7,800

Another bomber with fantastic value at the top of the $7,000 price range, Joseph Bramlett checks a lot of the boxes for this week. Over the last 12 months, he’s averaging 318 yards off the tee, has gained strokes on approach in 8 of his last 11 events and ranks 21st in this field in birdie-or-better percentage over the last 50 rounds. Bramlett profiles as an excellent course fit and is a bit underpriced for his range of outcomes.

GPP Flier: Harry Hall — $7,400

Harry Hall may not have elite length off the tee, but he still averages well over 300 yards. With two top-15 finishes in his last four starts, Hall appears to be gaining some nice momentum coming into the Mexico Open. His ownership is being kept in check due to the inconsistency in his approach game, which he more than makes up for with the flat stick. Over the last 50 rounds, he ranks sixth in this field in strokes gained putting. At a course set up to be a birdie fest, a longer hitter with an excellent putter is worth taking a shot at 5% ownership.
