MLB DFS Contrarian Pitcher

Royals-Guardians: Brady Singer

Stokastic’s Top 2 Pitcher Rate
DraftKings: 9.8%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $9,000

Even with nine games on tonight’s docket and good pitching options scattered across every price point, pitcher ownership is still very concentrated, with three pitchers projected to get the majority of love on DraftKings. As of this writing, Dylan Cease, Logan Gilbert and Paul Skenes are projected to eat up a combined 94.4% ownership, with Braxton Garrett and Carlos Rodon creeping up behind them. While all of those pitchers look good in their own right, that leaves a bunch of arms that are coming in underowned. Royals right-hander Brady Singer is firmly in that group, and he’s the top contrarian pitcher on DraftKings.

Through 11 starts this season, Singer sports a 2.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 64, strikeouts and 19 walks across 61.2 innings. Singer’s 25% strikeout rate is the highest of his career, and as such, he’s much more viable for DFS purposes than he used to be. Though his 4.35 xERA calls for some major negative regression, the field is acting as if that’s guaranteed to come tonight by basically crossing him out of the player pool.

As of this writing, Singer is projected to be a top-2 pitcher 9.8% of the time this slate plays out. With only 1.0% of the field expected to roster them, it’s easy to get over the field on him in GPPs.

MLB DFS Contrarian Stack

Dodgers-Pirates: Dodgers

Stokastic’s Top Stack Projection
DraftKings: 6.8%
Ownership Projection
DraftKings: 2.5%

In what sets up as one of the best matchups of the MLB season, the Dodgers match up with uber prospect Paul Skenes in Pittsburgh this evening. It’s not often we see the best offense in baseball take on the game’s top pitching prospect, and that’s exactly the scenario we have tonight. Skenes has undoubtedly been phenomenal through four starts, and because of his strikeout upside, there’s a reasonable case to be made that he’s already one of the top pitchers in the entire DFS landscape. All that being said, he’s only made four career starts at the major league level and the Dodgers are falling through the cracks in a massive way on DraftKings.

Coming into tonight with a 2.45 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 30 strikeouts and five walks through 22 innings, Skenes has been as good as advertised for a Pirates team that desperately needed to strike gold. With a 35.7% strikeout rate, Skenes is in play on every slate he’s on until further notice, and tonight is no exception. The field knows this already, however, as he’s projected to be the third-highest-owned pitcher on the slate. While he has massive upside every time he toes the rubber, Skenes has never in his life faced a lineup as potent as the one the Dodgers will be throwing at him tonight. Though it’s not extremely likely to work out, the Dodgers’ ceiling is always sky high, and we’ve yet to see what happens to Skenes when he gets into some trouble — a likely occurrence tonight.

Los Angeles currently projects to be the top stack 6.8% of the time this slate plays out, but only 2.5% of the field is expected to stack it.
