Core Play of the Day — Alperen Sengun: Houston Rockets at Dallas Mavericks

This is the first time that Alperen Sengun has been a featured recommendation in this article series. Typically the center position also has the best point per dollar at a variety of salary levels, so it can often be a “last player in” situation or in the case of the Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic type players, a raw-point consideration on the smaller slates.

Today the winners of the last three NBA MVPs are not taking the court, so our “opportunity” cost is not as steep as it usually is when they are in the mix. Bam Adebayo (hip) gets a fantasy boost if Jimmy Butler remains out and Rudy Gobert stands out as one of the other top options, when factoring in the mid-level salary.

Sengun has seen a minutes increase of nearly 10% over last year, while also increasing his scoring and assists. He is averaging just over 40 fantasy points per game and he should be considered as having a new 1.25 fantasy points per minute baseline. Maximilian Kleber (toe) is out and rookie Derek Lively II has been dealing with a back issue. That has thrust Richaun Holmes into the mix and defense is something that is not in his toolkit.

Even if Lively plays, he is not going to be equipped to deal with a multi-talented threat like Sengun. In two of his last three games, the former 16th selection of the 2021 NBA Draft has logged 50-plus fantasy points in two of his last three games and a 50 burger is certainly on the menu tonight. Sengun has come close to a triple-double on a few occasions this season and the one time he did have double-digit assists (12), he just missed out on rebounds.

Draymond Green: Golden State Warriors at Sacramento Kings

Tonight there is a decent chance we get the motivated and focused version of Draymond Green, as he just finished serving his five-game suspension. This will be the third time these teams have squared off this season, with the Warriors winning by eight and one points. Green missed the first game of this series, but Green has performed well in this matchup in the past, including notching nearly 40 fantasy points against the Kings at the beginning of November.

Green is in the sweet spot on the salary sheet, where he will start to fall off the radar as more value plays appear with injury reports being released throughout the day. If chaos once again descends as it often does just before lock, do not forget about the mercurial Michigan State stalwart.

Charlotte Hornets at New York Knickerbockers

The Hornets will be without LaMelo Ball (ankle) and Nick Richards (concussion), though it sounds like James Bouknight (knee) may be ready to make his first appearance of the season. Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges and Gordon Hayward should see additional field goal opportunities and potentially a few more minutes, with two key members of the rotation sidelined tonight.

New York gets the benefit of playing against one of the worst defenses in the league, though they are double-digit home favorites, so there is always the risk that the understudies take over the stage for the final frame. Of course, after watching the Nuggets knock off the Clippers last night, there are no true certainties on any given night.

Julius Randle stands out as an excellent option on both DraftKings and FanDuel, with RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley popping up on DraftKings. New York has lost two of the last three games, so they should not be taking any opponent for granted, particularly since they are just two games above .500 with an 8-6 record.

Quickley has two paths to fantasy glory between the up-tempo, defensively-lax matchup, as well as likely running the show in mop-up duty. Barrett is more of a salary play, with his reduction being influenced by four consecutive games with mid-20s fantasy production. Finally, there is Jalen Brunson, though with his fantasy value intertwined with his scoring output, he does have downside risk if this game turns into a laugher.

Additional NBA Building Blocks Pick — Sports Betting Opportunities

Evan Mobley is getting lost in the shuffle in the DFS world with so many appealing frontcourt options, but we can look to take advantage of him in the sports wagering market. Tonight we can look to a -110 payout on his double-double prop. NBA Bet Pro currently has him projected for 35,5 minutes, 16.93 points and 10.20. The “True Odds” (how OddsShopper measures the potential expected ROI of a given wager) are -105, which does indicate that this bet has a slightly negative expected ROI of 1%.

There is still opportunity in this wager as we need to understand the difference between a median projection and an actual range of outcomes. The 22-year-old has 11 double-doubles in his 17 games and this year he is averaging a career-best 16.3 points and 10.4 rebounds, in just 33.2 minutes per game. Atlanta plays at a free-wheeling pace and though Mobley will be battling teammate Jarrett Allen as well as the Atlanta frontcourt featuring Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu, there should be plenty of errant caroms for everyone tonight.
