NHL Betting Picks: Blues vs. Avalanche | Jan. 13
The NHL is finally back after a crazy 2020 and offseason. With no preseason games and very strict practicing guidelines, the predictability of this early season should be interesting and, dare I say, unpredictable. Regardless, I think we can lean on what we know about these teams to help us make informed NHL Bets. Both the Avalanche and Blues come in with expectations of making the playoffs again after bowing out last year. The Blues had one key loss over the offseason in Alex Pietrangelo but did replace him with career Bruin Torey Krug. The Avalanche are carrying a very similar team to last year, with high-paced Nathan MacKinnon leading the charge.
Best Bet: Over 5.5 Goals, -118 (SugarHouse)
As mentioned above, the beginning of this NHL season could be a real mystery given the lack of prep and live-game experience. Until teams have some time to get cohesion and fluidity, I’ll be leaning on talent to carry my bets. With the lowest over/under on the night at 5.5 goals and still plenty of offensive firepower on both sides, I like this bet a lot.
On the Avalanche side, everything starts with MacKinnon and the top line. He and Mikko Rantanen alone accounted for more than two goals per game for the entire season last year. Along with that, they also have the Calder Trophy winner Cale Makar (50 points), who is an aggressive skater that creates rushes frequently. And just to close it up, Erik Johnson, their best defenseman, is out for the opener.
The Blues are not at 100% right now, with top-scorer Vladimir Tarasenko recovering from surgery, but they still possess a few weapons that can create chances. At the forefront of their attack will be 2019 Conn Smythe and Selke Trophy winner, Ryan O’Reilly. Surely looking to regain his 2019 form that saw him score 77 points and lead the Blues to a Stanley Cup, the Captain feeds off big games and tough opponents. He and his line mates Brayden Schenn and David Perron should get plus matchups regardless of how the game shakes out with line matching.
I expect this game, along with many, to be a shootout until teams have some real-life ice time under them.
