2022 Points Standings

With Chase Elliott’s victory, the playoffs picture looks fairly static save for the 16th and final spot. 14 drivers have won at least one race this season giving just two open spots for drivers to currently qualify for the playoffs via points.

Before Nashville, Aric Almirola was holding down the last spot. However, that position is now held by Kevin Harvick who holds a 9-point margin over his Stewart-Haas teammate. Drivers 17 through 20 all trail Harvick by double digits; Tyler Reddick (-52), Austin Dillon (-53), Erik Jones (-58) and Michael McDowell (-97). With just nine races remaining before the regular season concludes at Daytona, these gaps are by no means insurmountable, but with Road America on the schedule this Sunday, Harvick could use a solid finish to help build his cushion against these five drivers who are currently on the outside looking in.

Road America Preview

As stated above, this weekend finds NASCAR returning to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for its second straight Cup Series race at Road America. A track measuring over four miles in length is a behemoth, thus this Sunday’s race is just 62 laps. Besides its length, more than twice what Sonoma measured, the dominating feature of Road America is its layout. Road America is almost a combination of two venues; part of Road America looks like it could be a quasi-Indianapolis Motor Speedway-inspired rectangle while the other half of Road America is the true road course with several turns, bus stops, chicanes and a carousel. This course provides drivers several different areas to pass, whether via outbreaking or sheer horsepower.

2021 was the first time in decades that the NASCAR Cup Series had raced at Road America and the race was defined more by qualifying than the actual race. Several drivers including race winner Chase Elliott failed to make a qualifying lap after waiting until the end of the first qualifying session just to find themselves hung out via a wreck that nullified their current efforts. Once the green flag came back out, there wasn’t enough time for these drivers to make a circuit around the track and then run a qualifying lap. By the end of the race, five of these drivers had raced from the rear to the top 12 and ended up in the optimal DraftKings lineup. Sunday’s starting grid should fall in line more with normal, however, don’t be shocked if an errant driver wrecks in practice and is forced to start at the rear after not being able to post a qualifying lap.

As far as lineup construction, it’s hard to draw too many parallels between last year and this year as the grid in 2021 dictated lineups get built much like a cash-style team. Yet, one thing that should remain true is the need for high finishers. Yes, several of the optimal drivers all picked up at least 26 positions or more but the thing they all shared was finishes of 12th or better. The lone driver to make the optimal DraftKings lineup that didn’t start in the rear was Christopher Bell, but he finished in second place, after starting 13th, while also leading 19 laps. This correlates with the optimal lineup from Sonoma where no driver finished worse than 10th and at COTA where all six optimal drivers had a finish of 13th or better. In cash games, it’s fine to aim for drivers with safe floors who can grab place differential, but the money is made in tournaments by nailing drivers who finish in the top 10.
