MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks
Spotlight Pitchers
Main Slate Pitching Target: RHP Alek Manoah vs. Detroit Tigers — 3.4 implied runs
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $7,700 | FanDuel $9,900 | Yahoo $50
RHP Alek Manoah is the lucky winner of the “Which pitcher is facing the Detroit Tigers sweepstakes?” on Tuesday’s main slate. Through 10 games, the Motor City Kitties have plated a league-worst 27 runs, and the numbers only go downhill from there.
Last season Manoah had a major breakout campaign, and he ended up finishing third in the Cy Young Award voting behind winner Justin Verlander and runner-up Dylan Cease. The 25-year-old has a solid all-around game, limiting power and also providing enough strikeout upside to keep his fantasy backers happy. The Blue Jays are nearly -300 moneyline favorites for the win, which bodes well for Manoah.
Late Slate Pitching Target: RHP Shohei Ohtani vs. Washington Nationals — 3.2 implied runs
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,700 | FanDuel $10,800 | Yahoo $57
After thriving in the World Baseball Classic, Shohei Ohtani looks to be in midseason form with a miniscule 0.75 ERA across his first two starts with only a 1.00 WHIP and a wicked 18 strikeouts in a dozen innings. Washington carried over the offensive momentum they picked up in Coors Field over the weekend with six runs last night, however, Jose Suarez is a far cry from the talent level of Ohtani.
Early Slate Pitching Target: RHP Grayson Rodriguez vs. Oakland Athletics — 3.3 implied runs
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $4,900 | FanDuel $9,000 | Yahoo $43
The DraftKings salary algorithm completely missed the boat on Grayson Rodriguez, who should be preloaded into every lineup as the SP2. He is the top pitching prospect in the Baltimore MiLB system, and seamheads everywhere have been eagerly awaiting his callup to see what he can do.
In his debut, the Texas native cruised through the Rangers lineup, allowing just two runs over five innings and striking out five. The Oakland offense is comparable to the putridity of Detroit’s, and these two squads are ones we will be targeting all season. Enjoy the discount on DraftKings, but do give Rodriguez strong consideration as your SP1 on FanDuel and Yahoo as well.
MLB Top Stacks
Main Slate Target: New York Mets vs. LHP Ryan Weathers — 4.7 implied runs
There could be some home runs in the forecast with LHP Ryan Weathers toeing the rubber tonight in the Big Apple. He first popped up in The Show in the first game of the 2020 National League Divisional Series when the Padres were facing the Dodgers. The next season, Weathers appeared in 30 games with the Friars, though the results were rough, culminating in 94.2 innings, a whopping 20 round-trippers and a paltry 72 strikeouts.
Most of 2022 was spent in the minors, with very few positive moments; he had 123 innings, 2.3 home runs per nine innings and an anemic 88 strikeouts against Triple-A hitters. Weathers threw 90 pitches in his first start last Monday against the Diamondbacks, logging five innings, a pair of strikeouts and a pair of earned runs. Though he profiles better as a multi-inning reliever, injuries to the San Diego rotation have him getting a chance to show what he has learned over the last couple of seasons down on the farm.

Look to the power hitters swinging the stick from the right side of the plate as one of tonight’s Coors Field pivots. Pete Alonso crushed opposite-handed hurlers last year, posting a .256 ISO, and Starling Marte has a long history of doing his best work against southpaws. Switch-hitters Francisco Lindor and Eduardo Escobar each boast a .200-plus ISO from the right side of the plate, and they will have the platoon advantage all game. Depending on where they end up in the batting order, Tommy Pham and Mark Canha are viable options to round out a full stack.
Late Slate Target: Los Angeles Angels vs. RHP Josiah Gray — 5.5 implied runs
Sadly, the main DFS sites have not figured out how to include Ohtani as a hitter on days when he is also the starting pitcher. However, we can easily construct a secondary stack of his teammates on the main slate, and the Angels also look good on the late slate.
Josiah Gray started the season where he left off, ceding a trio of home runs in Washington to the visiting Atlanta offense. Somehow he managed to avoid any longballs in Coors Field in his second start, but keep in mind he allowed a league-leading 38 last year.
Over the last couple seasons and change, the former Dodger has allowed 1.86 home runs per nine innings to same-handed batsmen, while lefties have destroyed his offerings with a 3.04 rate. That is why not being able to roster Ohtani is so frustrating, though at least he will actually be powering the Halos offense. Jake Lamb never quite put it all together, but he looks like a fine option as one of the few left-handed hitters likely to be in the lineup.
Mike Trout is never a bad consolation prize, and if Anthony Rendon (shoulder) is healthy enough to play, he is worthy of our consideration as well. Hunter Renfroe has a grand reputation for crushing lefties, but his prodigious power also plays against same-handed pitching. The combination of high salaries and a Coors Field Extravaganza should keep The Masses away from Anaheim on the main slate. For the three-game late slate, most viable bats will be on 20% or more of all rosters.
Early Slate Target: Baltimore Orioles vs. LHP Kyle Muller — 5.1 implied runs
Once more the Orioles are the early-slate recommendation against another Oakland lefty. They got off to a strong start on Monday, with two runs in the first and another in the third before tailing off and managing just two more for the remainder of the game.
Kyle Muller came over to the Athletics in a three-team December deal that saw Sean Murphy as the main piece being contributed to the pot. While Muller did not show much in the way of strikeout upside in the Atlanta farm system, he did do a reasonable job of limiting power. It remains to be seen how that will play out in The Show; however, in the meantime we can hope the Baltimore bats find more success today than they did yesterday.
The usual trio in the heart of the order — switch-hitter Anthony Santander and righties Ryan Mountcastle and Austin Hayes — is a great place to start. Jorge Mateo is a threat to run if he can get on base, and ideally catcher Adley Rutschman can build on yesterday’s home run.
