PGA Odds & Expert Picks: Olympic Golf

In this new weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 2020 Olympic Golf.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Paul Casey

Outright 16-1 (BetMGM)

Olympic golf has only happened once before, so betting on it is a completely blank slate. The event resembles more of a WGC than a normal PGA event, as it has 60 players guaranteed four rounds. Like any week in the outright market, the goal is to find players who fit the course and whose odds provide plenty of value compared to their chance of success. With this field the odds are much shorter on most guys just because they only have to beat 59 players. One guy that stood out to me was Casey, who sits at 16-1 to grab a gold medal and keep the run going for Great Britain.

Casey is a pure ball striker, which could translate well at this Tokyo venue. He can rely on the irons, and the large greens will not cause him serious issues, even though his putter is a liability. Casey has played consistent golf the entire season, and there is no reason to think he cannot once again be among the leaders tee to green here. If that is the case, I will take my chances with a fluke putting week.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Marc Leishman Outright, Sebastian Munoz Top 20

Leishman Outright 40-1 (PointsBet) | Munoz Top 20 +175 (PointsBet)

Leishman is only two events removed from a third-place finish at the Travelers where he shot a final-round 65 and nearly grabbed the win late Sunday. He is no stranger to playing overseas, as he already has wins at the CIMB Classic (2018) and also lost in a playoff to Justin Thomas at the C.J. Cup in 2017. Leishman’s profile sets up well for what should be a very receptive golf course (i.e. wet). Leishman won on another Tom Fazio venue in 2017 (Conway Farms, BMW Classic), and as one of the most inaccurate drivers on tour, he will benefit from the big fairways in play. He has good outright odds coming off a missed cut at the British Open, and he is of similar age to Justin Rose when he won this event in 2016.

If you want a little less variance, the top-20 odds on Munoz are also very appealing. Munoz is only a couple of weeks removed from a fourth-place finish at the John Deere Classic where he gained 8.3 strokes on approach. This event could be lower scoring as well, and Munoz ranks 10th in this field in birdies gained over the last 50 rounds. A win may be asking too much, but these top-20 odds are appealing in this weaker field.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: To Medal Bets

Justin Thomas 3-1 (All Bets from PointsBet)

Hideki Matsuyama 3.5-1

Sungjae Im 8-1

Si Woo Kim 12-1

This is a fun way to bet this week and a great way to get into the spirit of the Olympic games. There are a few in this category I like and a few everyone will want to pay attention to. First, Thomas is 3-1 to medal this week. While he could be the No. 1 candidate for the gold as well, if his putter is cold, he will not win. His tee-to-green game will put him on the podium regardless of how bad the putter is. Matsuyama will make his country proud as well and wind up on the podium come Sunday. Lastly, is there anyone else better to root for this week than the South Koreans given their impending military requirements are on the line?

Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Rory McIlroy

Outright 12-1 (BetMGM) | To Medal +325 (PointsBet)

After expressing remorse for skipping the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, McIlroy sets his sights on righting that wrong this week. It is a little bit of guesswork regarding Kasumigaseki Country Club, but hole-by-hole aerial looks bear a striking resemblance to Quail Hollow, albeit with bentgrass greens. However, the other course it seems a bit reminiscent of is Congressional Country Club, a venue McIlroy dominated a decade ago en route to a U.S. Open victory and 16-under scoring record (with bentgrass greens).

As for McIlroy’s current form, he has gained in seven consecutive tournaments with the irons (excluding the British Open where there is no specific strokes gained data), a welcome addition to pair with his noted driving ability. The question with McIlroy always comes down to his putter, but every time it remotely cooperates he knocks on the door of a win. With large greens and the ability to go low or grind, depending on what this course requires, McIlroy makes the best outright/medal bet at his odds.
