As part of the Round of 64, we’ll see see North Texas vs Purdue, as the lower seed tries to pull off a massive upset. These two teams have almost identical records, but Purdue is the No. 4 seed and one of the best teams in the Big Ten.

At first glance, you may not have much faith in North Texas. After all, when have we ever heard of them and basketball in the same sentence? Purdue is battle tested, so preparation shouldn’t be the issue. They also have an impressive 7-2 record against the spread on at least four days rest.

That said, North Texas has the nation’s 10th-best defense and a perfect 4-0 record against the spread on neutral courts this season. Plus, Purdue always bores me as a team. It’s worth noting that they were only favored twice on the road this season, meaning the oddsmakers don’t think they’re very good away from home.

I kind of said it all earlier in that North Texas has the 10th-best defense in the country. Not to mention, Purdue’s 68.2 possessions per game ranks 297th out of 347 Division-1 teams this. Most people would be terrified of taking the under of something as low as 126.5 points. As I learned a long time ago, a low total is low for a good reason. These two teams should be in an absolute grind-it-out battle all night.

Purdue is one of three teams ranking inside the top 25 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Playing a Big Ten schedule, this Purdue team holds the firepower to blow out a size-lacking North Texas team. North Texas also is an efficiency darling, but their schedule featured three Quadrant 1 games. They went 0-3 in these contests.
