THURSDAY’S TOP 3 NBA Betting Picks: Clint Capela & Heat Moneyline | 2/3/22

The big question heading into tonight’s six-game slate is, will LeBron James (knee) play against the Clippers? James missed his fourth straight game on Wednesday, though the Lakers (25-27) did snap a three-game losing streak with a 99-94 victory over the Trail Blazers. Meanwhile, the Clippers (26-27) return home after falling to the Pacers 121-116 to close out an eight-game road trip on Monday. Chicago – Toronto is also an intriguing matchup.

Heat Moneyline (-220) Over Spurs; Under 221 points

Miami enters the game on a season-high tying three-game losing streak. The Heat have struggled mightily on the offensive end over the last three games, but much more troubling is that they have committed 60 turnovers during this stretch. Jimmy Butler, who sat out Monday’s loss to Boston, and Bam Adebayo have played well the past few games, but they are combining for seven turnovers a game. Tyler Hero and Dewayne Dedmon also have been plagued by turnover issues.

There is good news coming out of the camp, as Butler (toe), Caleb Martin (Achilles), P.J. Tucker (knee) and Kyle Lowry (personal) could all play. Martin picked up the injury in Tuesday’s loss to Toronto, while Lowry has been out since Jan. 15. Also, the Heat are 20-13 following an off-day and 19-7 against teams with a sub-.500 record. Expect Adebayo to feast with the Spurs not having Jakob Poeltl (concussion) or Jock Landale available.

San Antonio also enters the game in poor form, having lost two straight and 14 of 19. Defense continues to be a huge issue, as the Spurs are allowing over 116 points on 47.7% shooting over the last six games. San Antonio is just 7-22 against teams with a .500 or better record. Moreover, Dejounte Murray (wrist) and Doug McDermott (ankle) are questionable.

With so many injuries and Miami’s ability to be good on the defensive end, Awesemo’s projections likes the under with 218.8 points scored. The Heat are holding opponents to an effective field goal percentage of 52.5%, and they play at the second-slowest pace in the league at 96.15 possessions. OddsShopper gives the under a 54% chance of hitting and an expected ROI of 2%.

Timberwolves First Quarter Spread (-2.5) Over the Pistons

Minnesota has come out of the gate hot all season long, averaging a league-high 29.3 points in the opening 12 minutes. The Timberwolves have been even better in the first quarter since the calendar turned to 2022, as they have averaged 31.1 points while shooting 49.5% from the field and knocking down 3.6 3-pointers at a 36% clip. They have outscored their opponents by 4.7 points in the opening quarter over the last month, which includes a plus-2.8 scoring margin on the road during this stretch. A big reason for this is that the Timberwolves generally get Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards going early, and if they do tonight that does not bode well for the Pistons, as their frontcourt struggles defensively.

While Detroit has started the game off better offensively lately, they continue to struggle defensively in the first. The Pistons have been outscored by 4.8 points, as they are allowing over 31 points over their last 17 games in the first 12 minutes, and they may not have Cade Cunningham tonight. Cunningham (hip) has averaged a team-best 5.1 points in the opening quarter since Jan. 1.

Clint Capela Under 1.5 Assists

Capela has done the best job at playmaking this year, as he has tied his career high with 1.4 assists per game and posted a career-low in turnovers at 0.4. However, he has recorded fewer than two assists in six of his last nine appearances while seeing less than 25 minutes of court time per game. Furthermore, Capela doled out just one assist in the earlier meeting against Phoenix and is projected for 1.17 assists tonight.
