PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Round 3 of the Tournament of Champions

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy lineups. We’re in search of a few recommendations for the third round of the Tournament of Champions. In a typical Showdown GPP, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first place for second and third-round tournaments and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first place on average. FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final-round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first place in their PGA DFS showdown contests.

Tournament of Champions Round 3 PGA DFS Showdown

Previous Round Recap

Tony Finau & Sebastian Munoz were the first two golfers out today, and they played like it, flying around the course. They set the tone for scoring, with Finau shooting 68 and Munoz going around in a bogey-free 66. The low totals would continue all the way through the day. Overnight leaders Justin Thomas and Harris English weren’t able to match the low round of the day, which was 65 for the second day in a row. That score was posted by playing mates Daniel Berger and Collin Morikawa. English, however, did enough to maintain pace, as Harris posted a six-under 67 while Thomas’s putter went cold on the back nine and he shot a five-under 68. English will take a two-shot lead into the weekend.

It’s an incredibly bunched leaderboard, one of the first times we’ve seen this at this tournament, with only Hideki Matsuyama over par. There are over 20 golfers that are within four shots of the lead, however, which is more than half the field!

General Strategy and Tournament of Champions PGA DFS Picks

Kapalua course, in all of its beauty, is quite easy for these guys when there is no wind to protect it. Again, here in the third round, it doesn’t matter what type of golfer you want to roster; he’s got a shot at playing well here this week. The weather is supposed to be ideal again, which should keep the field close together throughout the weekend.

Top 10

With Collin Morikawa racing up the board in round 2, it will be hard for me to pass on him, given the fact that his game looks to be in very solid shape. He bounced back after losing almost 2.7 strokes, putting in round 1. Morikawa had a good day in round two, gaining .75 on the day, showing some positive signs heading into the weekend. Continually fading Harris Englishcould end up bankrupting me in the end, but I’ll give it a go for a least one more round. Brendon Todd continues to play steady golf. He also remains under-owned, so look to him to provide some positive variance.

Other PGA DFS

  • Jon Rahm ($9,500) A product of price here, as Rahm’s club switch has made him a bit sluggish for the first two rounds. But now he’s priced as the seventh-highest golfer in the sale and has some good momentum heading into the weekend after a good second round. I’d like to jump on the low salary, and hopefully.
  • Cameron Champ ($7,400) Another product of a good price, Champ has come down a bit from his week-long price. He shot five-under with no bogey’s today and only birdied one of the four par 5s. That won’t happen again; I’ll bet on it! Given that he’s tied for 27th, I suspect he’ll be rather lower owned as well.
  • Martin Laird ($6,500) While Laird only has 8 birdies in two days; he also accompanies that with no bogeys! That’s pretty impressive. That’s enough for me to give him a go in round three and see if we can catch a hot putter.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Dustin Johnson ($10,500)

Carlos Oritz ($7,700)

Scottie Scheffler ($7,600)
