Monkey Knife Fight PGA Picks This Week for The Travelers Championship

The 2021 PGA season continues this week with the Travelers Championship, which takes place at TPC River Highlands (Par 70, 6,841 yards) of Cromwell, Conn. Dustin Johnson secured a win here last season, and TPC River Highlands has been the host of this event for the last 37 years. If you haven’t already, this week is a perfect time to check out Monkey Knife Fight — a new style of PGA fantasy with a twist on the usual DFS PGA picks and strategy we’re used to — with the fantasy site offering some great contests for the Travelers Championship. Below, I break down some of my favorite PGA Monkey Knife Fight picks for their featured contests for the Travelers Championship.

Monkey Knife Fight PGA Fantasy Picks This Week | Travelers Championship

For this Monkey Knife Fight contest, it’s just like with a prop in that players have to choose if each golfer will score more or less their fantasy line. If both are correct, the payout is 2.5x on the buy-in. It is worth noting MKF’s fantasy golf scoring system is different compared to other DFS sites. No points are awarded for finishing position or streaks, nor do players lose points for bogeys. Their scoring system is simple:

  • Eagle or Better: 5
  • Birdie: 3
  • Par: 1

Patrick Cantlay: More than 101.5 fantasy points

Brooks Koepka: Less than 101.5 fantasy points

Cantlay has finished inside the top 15 at the past three Travelers Championships and heads back to Cromwell in stellar form. After carding a 23rd-place at the PGA Championship, he beat Collin Morikawa in a playoff to win the Memorial Tournament. Then he followed up this victory with a 15th-place finish this past week at the U.S. Open. Cantlay has been an incredible ball-striker during this stretch, ranking second in strokes gained tee-to-green and sixth in strokes gained approach. Furthermore, he has been an elite Par-4 player, gaining more strokes on Par 4’s in his last 12 rounds than any other player competing in Connecticut this week. With TPC River Highlands being a Par-70, being a dominant Par-4 player is essential to winning at this course, and I like Cantlay to post his best Travelers Championship finish to date this weekend.

Koepka is also coming off a strong outing last week at the US Open, finishing fourth at the South Course of Torrey Pines. This was his second top 5 in his past three starts, but both of these high finishes were at major events, and Koepka is just two for his last five in made cuts overall. Over the last few seasons, he has rarely ever taken the tournaments surrounding a major seriously, and this week should be no different. He has missed four straight cuts following a major, and while he has a spotless 4-for-4 record at TPC River Highlands, Koepka has only finished in the top 10 once at this venue. Betting against him is never easy, but I think taking the under here with Koepka is the right decision.

Dustin Johnson: More than 18.5 birdies

Bryson DeChambeau: More than 18.5 birdies

TPC River Highlands is one of the easiest tracks these players will face all season, and this event always becomes a birdie fest. In his victory here last year, Johnson converted 25 birdies and finished 19-under par. Before his 19th-place finish at the South Course last weekend, Johnson racked up 20 birdies at the Palmetto Championship, en route to a 10th-place finish at Congaree Golf Club. Evident from his win at TPC River Highlands last season, Johnson loves attacking Par 70s. If we put all of these player’s last 50 rounds on Par 70s side by side, he ranks No. 1 in total strokes gained and first in birdies. Johnson should effortlessly beat this number and find himself in the hunt for his second straight Travelers Championship title this Sunday.

On the other side of this matchup, DeChambeau comes in this week slightly ahead of Johnson in the betting market and is the current favorite to win this tournament. Despite his meltdown during the final round of the US Open, I fully expect DeChambeau to bounce back and contend this week at the Travelers Championship. He has recorded three consecutive top-10s at TPC River Highlands, averaging 20.7 birdies per start for these three finishes. His flat stack has been extremely effective on the greens at this Par 70, positively gaining strokes putting every time he has visited Cromwell, and in total, DeChambeau ranks fifth in this field for career strokes gained at the Travelers. His current form is also encouraging, gaining strokes tee-to-green and on approach at his past three events. Much like Johnson, DeChambeau should be in the mix for a win come Sunday afternoon.
